He helped to develop the world’s most powerful telescope (VLT) in Chile and contributed to many major discoveries of current astronomy. He was a member of one of the two teams that confirmed the accelerating expansion of the universe. Three US astronomers were awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery.
