BSA boss & Nathan congratulate Kriel

from General Sports Hosted by SABC Sport

Boxing South Africa (BSA) chief executive officer Tsholofelo Lejaka has congratulated newly-crowned International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight champion DeeJay Kriel after he won the belt when he stopped Mexican boxer Carlos Licona in the 12th round in a fight, which was held at the Microsoft Theatre in the United States early yesterday. Kriel, who was behind on points going into the final three minutes of the fight, decked Licona three times in the 12th round. According to fight judges Patrick Russell and Danny Sandoval’s score cards, Kriel had only won two rounds going to the 12th round while Rudy Barragan had the 23-year-old winning six of the first 11 rounds. The BSA boss has added that Kriel’s victory bears testimony to the fact that South African boxers are ready to compete against opponents from anywhere. Kriel, who is trained by legendary 78-year-old American boxing trainer Kenny Adams, left South Africa to search for glory in the US last year. Lejaka still insists that getting involved in fight for the world’s prestigious boxing bodies should be the way to go for South African boxers just like Kriel, a former World Boxing Council (WBC) International minimumweight champion, has done. Meanwhile, Kriel’s former trainer Colin Nathan has described the Johannesburg-born boxer’s victory over Licona as a remarkable win for South Africa.
