BTS of The Outback Long Ride - with Sarah Wheeler

from Cowgirl Channel · host Toni Lamb and Bella Hanson

Hey Hey for another Friyayyy CC babes & WELCOME to Season 5! Today we're bringing you all the details and behind the scenes of Sarah Wheeler's Outback Longride. This is a chat we have been bursting at the seams to share with you. In an act of both selflessness and healing from the loss of her parents, Sarah Wheeler (or you might recognise her as Beneath the Brim on instagram) trekked 5,500km across the outback on horseback to raise much needed funds for upper GI cancer support and research. Whilst a deeply personal mission to heal her own grief, the 27-year-old from Rowena NSW raised over half a million for the Pancare Foundation on The Outback Long Ride. Her two horses, Sally and Shifty, or Shady and Shifty as Bell recalls (facepalm), were her constants throughout this journey off the beaten track. In a long form chat, we gain insight into what the reality of those 9 long months on the road were truly like, from riding towards bull camels, saddling up each morning, rail, hail, or shine,  to having the logistics of constantly finding a support driver and a bed for the night. From the strength and resilience to push forward instilled by her mother after the unexpected passing of her father when Sarah was only 12, Sarah has inspired those across the nation with her determination to push forward in the hope that her efforts can save others that are hit with the cruel cancer that killed her mum within 5 months of diagnosis. Find out what obstacles presented themselves and how she kept pushing on. Having now completed The Outback Long Ride, we think Sarah is sooooo deserving of a good cocktail by the beach or poolside at least! Sarah openly talks about how the grief of losing both her parents has taken its toll on her and why she is starting her own charity, A Daughter’s Way, to help support those going through their own grief. About the charity: A Daughter’s Way is Sarah’s own charity, where she aims to create all expenses paid weekends to 7 day retreats, group camps or group expeditions run by trained mental health professionals, and developed by clinical psychologists and so much more for rural families experiencing grief and loss in Australia. If you have an embarrassing story to share or a question to ask, we would love to hear it!
