Buddy Holly tuvo una carrera meteórica. Tras ver a Elvis Presley en 1955, fichó con la discográfica Decca. Pero sus singles no tenían éxito. Insatisfecho, Holly publicó sus canciones con el grupo The Crickets. En 1957, el éxito de los singles "That'll Be the Day" y "Peggy Sue" llevó a los Crickets a ser el primer conjunto blanco en tocar en el Teatro Apollo del barrio de Harlem. Tras la disolución del grupo, en 1959, Holly alquiló una avioneta para unirse a la gira del certamen Winter Dance Party en Wisconsin. El 3 de febrero de 1959, la aeronave se estrelló a cinco millas del punto de despegue. Junto a Holly fallecieron los músicos Richie Valens y The Big Bopper. Holly tenía 22 años.
