Beef Cattle News Border Closed To Mexican Livestock Imports Just days after reopening southern U.S. ports for Mexican livestock imports, the USDA has shut them down again due to a new case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Veracruz, Mexico—just 370 miles from the U.S. border. This follows earlier cases in May that prompted the initial closure. The USDA's phased reopening plan is now on hold, citing the need for stronger containment efforts in Mexico. The halt threatens U.S. beef supply chains, especially in Texas. To respond, the USDA is pushing for stricter controls in Mexico and fast-tracking a U.S.-based sterile fly production facility to fight the pest.
