Burnout — Part One: Shadow Burnout

from Soul Coherence™ Conversations Hosted by Yaroni Wilken

"I'm just tired. This too shall pass." That's what you say when someone asks. It's not a lie, exactly. It's just not the whole truth, and some part of you has decided the whole truth isn't safe to say out loud — not here, not to this person, maybe not even to yourself. Today, we open into Burnout — Part One: Shadow Burnout. There is a kind of burnout that walks quietly beside you while, to everyone else, life looks exactly the same — because you keep delivering. It hides in the shadows because this type ofburnout is not allowed. It could be seen as a weakness, one that feels like it might cost you more than the depletion itself already has. For anyone who has built a life around being capable, being the one others rely on, admitting exhaustion can feel like admitting something far more dangerous — that the capacity itself might not be there anymore, and what that might say about you. So instead, the system is forced to go into override. You keep showing up. You keep performing exactly what's expected. And underneath it, your system isrunning on fumes, because your internal reserves were used up a long time ago. Override mode has a particular danger to it. It isn't the big collapse that gives it away. It's how little it takes, once you're here, to threaten the entire structure. One unexpecteddemand. One difficult conversation. One small change to a plan you were relying on. What makes a single instance feel enormous is that you've been holding everything together by a thread. You don't want to admit it, but you're also not actively doing anything to change the trajectory — silently hoping something, somewhere, will shift and take the pressure off you. This is highly unlikely when you've built yourself to be the centre structure that holds up the quality of life others get to live. There is something important worth knowing here. Burnout is now formally recognised, by the World Health Organization, as a real and legitimate response to chronic, unmanaged stress. It isn't a personal failing, and it isn't something you're imagining. Prolonged exhaustion can sometimes overlap with something that genuinely needs a professional's care — so if what you're feeling has gone on for a long time, or feels heavier than what's described here, bringing in real support alongside this work is a wise and caring choice. You may benefit from the wholesome support of a trusted source to help you figure out the next best step for you, and what it will take for you to be fully supported in all areas of your life. To keep functioning under this kind of load, without proper support of your own, unhealthy patterns of disconnection get activated — from the body, from others, from life itself. Your body is an intelligent system, but it is not a machine. It requires the wholeness of you to function optimally. It requires mind, body, and soul to work coherently. It requires an empowered sense of self to be maintained. Ask yourself: is your life actually being lived for your own benefit, or are yousimply operating for the benefit of others? The answer will give you a clear indication of where you currently stand. Right now, notice if any part of you recognises this override — the sense of holding everything together with effort that's no longer sustainable. Simply notice it. Not to fix it in this moment. Just to let yourself see it clearly, perhaps for the first time in a while. What shadow burnout is ultimately asking of you is a different relationship with yourself — one where you areconsidered fully, and not simply the engine behind everything else you're holding up. This week, catch yourself in one moment of override — the moment you push through instead of pausing to ask what's actually true. And in that one moment, choose yourself first, even briefly. A pause. An honest word. A boundary held with compassion. That one choice is enough to begin with. Build on it incrementally. Make yourself a priority. I am holding a space to bridge ......
