Statistics South Africa announced the second quarter's Gross Domestic Product figure yesterday and the economy shrank by 0.7%. Economists always say they are not surprised, but this time really everyone expected the contraction. The manufacturing sector, mining and agriculture have shrunk, among other things as a result of the floods in KwaZulu-Natal, load shedding and foot-and-mouth disease. But that is history now.
