Butcher Baker Maniac Maker
from Dr. Nosleep · host History Riwend
He was a respected baker and avid hunter in Anchorage, Alaska. He had a wife, two children, and a successful business. His neighbors called him quiet, polite, and ordinary. But Robert Hansen was living a double life. Between 1971 and 1983, he abducted, raped, and murdered at least 17 women—and possibly more than 30. His method was as chilling as it was methodical: he would fly his victims into the remote Alaskan wilderness, release them, and hunt them like animals. He called it hunting. The police called him the "Butcher Baker." In this episode, we uncover the true story of one of America's most prolific serial killers. We examine how Hansen targeted marginalized women—prostitutes and dancers—knowing their disappearances would attract little attention. We trace the investigation that spanned more than a decade and the survivors who escaped to tell the tale, including Cindy Paulson, a 17-year-old sex worker who jumped from Hansen's plane and ran for her life, becoming the key witness who finally brought him down. We explore the discovery of the "Hansen Map," a collection of marked spots in the wilderness that led investigators to bodies and evidence, and the interrogation in which he calmly confessed to his crimes. He was sentenced to 461 years in prison without parole. He died in 2014 at the age of 75. This is the story of a man who turned the Alaskan wilderness into his personal hunting ground—and the woman who survived to make sure he never hunted again.
