After serving in the U.S. military during the Vietnam era, he returned home, saved his money, bought a used postal truck and started selling clothes and fish. He says he hasn’t had a job since. His philosophy is simple: “I’m not chasing money, I’m chasing freedom.” The conversation explores what happened to thriving neighborhood businesses, why ownership matters, the importance of creating institutions that can survive generations and what “do for self” means today. Shaheed also shares how Islam changed his life, the lessons he learned from his father, an ambitious business venture that took him to Sierra Leone, and the belief and courage required to become an entrepreneur before you have everything figured out.
