The sun sets behind Constantinople’s battered defenses, casting long shadows over a city beset by crisis. The sounds of merchants and pilgrims are replaced by the distant rumble of siege engines. The empire’s twilight has begun.The late eleventh century finds the Byzantine Empire stretched thin. Once-mighty armies now struggle against Seljuk Turks advancing through the Anatolian highlands. The defeat at Manzikert in ten seventy-one shatters military prestige and tears away the empire’s heartland. Landowners lose their fields, peasants flee to the safety of city walls, and the countryside empties. Tax records reveal a collapsing treasury. Coins are debased, and state assets mortgaged just to keep the lights burning in Constantinople.
