“C” is for Coker University

“C” is for Coker University. Founded in 1908 Coker is an independent liberal arts school located in Hartsville. Named for James Lide Coker, the school is the product of his philanthropic efforts to improve the state's educational opportunities. The burgeoning business enterprises of the Coker family provided funds to support the new institution. Until 1969 Coker was an all-women’s college. From its founding until 1944 the school was affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention but is now officially non-denominational. Between 2000 and 2025 Coker’s enrollment burgeoned from approximately 400 students to more than 1,100.  From its inception, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics has been partnered with Coker to provide college courses for its students. In 2019 Coker College became Coker University and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools  Commission on Colleges.
