As the Jewish Passover Feast approached, Jesus and His disciples were looking to escape the crowds for some quiet time on a mountainside. John tells us that Jesus and His disciples go to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee, where a large group of people follow Him b/c of the miraculous healings He had performed. When Jesus saw the large number of people approaching Him, He turned to Philip and asked where they could buy bread to feed everyone. Jesus didn't ask this question because He didn't have a solution but b/c he wanted to test Philip's faith and reveal His divine plan.
