CA attorney general pushes social media warnings labels in new legislation

from The State of California

California takes the lead on trying to require warning labels on social media for kids and teenagers. The legislation announced today comes amid growing concern about the impact of social media on the mental health of minors. There is mounting evidence about how excessive use of social media can lead to depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among young people. State Attorney General Rob Bonta and Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan of Orinda announced a bill today that would mandate warning labels that pop up when you sign on or log in. Among the groups advocating for and lobbying for this measure is Common Sense Media, a 20-year-old nonprofit organization that helps parents and schools navigate the often treacherous world of media and entertainment. For more, KCBS Radio's Doug Sovern spoke with Jim Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media.
