Calgary Landfill Fire and Legal Battle | Calgary News

Smoke from a stubborn landfill fire in Southeast Calgary has residents worried—and city officials are taking legal action against ECCO Recycling. The blaze, which started September 6, is deep in debris and keeps flaring up, forcing crews to use water, soil, and heavy equipment to fight it. ECCO allegedly broke its development permit by storing dry waste at its facility, prompting a court order to clear it out. The city is also suing to shut down the landfill operation and begin decommissioning, claiming ECCO still accepts waste illegally there. A health advisory warns vulnerable residents to stay indoors, while the city pushes for provincial air quality data to be released soon.
