Calgary Landfill Fire and Legal Fallout | Calgary News

A massive landfill fire in southeast Calgary is still smoldering deep inside a “mountain of garbage,” potentially burning for weeks or months. Firefighters have it contained but are battling the sheer scale of the blaze. The city is preparing to bill Ecco Recycling — the site’s operator — for firefighting costs, expected to be significant, while also enforcing legal action after a judge ruled they violated city bylaws and ignored stop orders. Meanwhile, smoke continues to affect nearby residents, prompting health warnings for those with breathing issues as air quality dips during wind shifts.
