Calgary Police Sound Alarm on Rising Shootings | Calgary News

Calgary’s police chief is sounding the alarm over a shocking 59% surge in shootings this year, with officers now facing unprecedented levels of violence and danger. Seized firearms have more than doubled, alongside massive upticks in cocaine and methamphetamine seizures — while some property crimes decline, the rise in deadly incidents is deeply troubling. A recent shootout during a traffic stop, where an officer was shot and suspects fired at a helicopter, exemplifies the “new normal” the chief calls deeply concerning. Organized crime is exploiting vulnerable youth, demanding community-wide prevention efforts beyond policing. Despite promising recruitment numbers, the department urgently needs budget boosts to fix staffing gaps and overhaul bail systems to tackle repeat offenders.
