Calgary’s Safer Streets for Kids | Calgary News

Calgary’s launching bold new moves to protect kids and pedestrians—speed humps, flashing beacons, and smart curb extensions are rolling out in high-traffic zones. With pedestrian deaths climbing to 15 last year and more expected this year, the city is blending old data with AI and drones to target safety upgrades where they’re needed most. These changes aren’t just signs—they’re redesigning streets to naturally slow drivers and slash collisions by up to 80%. But tech and infrastructure alone won’t cut it: drivers, cyclists, and walkers all need to stay vigilant, especially during busy school hours. This is part of Calgary’s bigger Vision Zero push—zero major injuries or fatalities—and it’s clear: everyone has a role to play.
