This special two-part panel episode discusses the new Black Serving Institution (BSI) designation that goes into effect in January 2025 and the impact it will have statewide.  Dr. Abdimalik Buul, Visiting Executive of Institution Equity, Innovation and Strategic Impact at the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, guides this important conversation with Dr. Luke Wood, president of California State University, Sacramento; Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson, Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District in the Bay Area; Pam Haynes, Board of Governor’s member of the California Community Colleges, and Joya Miller, a proud Army veteran, and biology student at Mt. San Jacinto College who plans on transferring to a four-year university.    The BSI designation is bestowed upon colleges that enroll high numbers of Black students and show an ongoing commitment to serving them. BSI's will be held to higher standards regarding increasing Black faculty and ensuring access to support programs like mentoring and financial aid to ensure students thrive through college and beyond.
