Welcome to California, Missouri, small enough to know you, large enough to serve you!" Located in central Missouri, the town was founded in 1834 and was originally named Boonesborough. The name was changed to California in 1847 because there was already another Boonesborough in the state. The town is home to what is thought to be the oldest continuous fair west of the Mississippi. The Moniteau County Fair began in 1866 and is held the first week in August each year. California is also home to the California Balloon Invitational on the third Saturday in July. The town also hosts a number of other festivals throughout the year. The town has been called home by a few notable people including artist Loran Creech and Nashville pop singer Kassi Ashton.
