Called to be the Light - Fr. Micah - July 16, 2023

from Holy Trinity + Holy Cross - Sermons · host Holy Trinity + Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral

In today’s Gospel reading, Matthew 5:14-19, Christ tells his disciples that “You are the light of the world.” Father Micah reminds us in today’s sermon that this light is not of our own, but the light of Christ. How then can we be this light to the world, as we are called? As a mirror reflects the sun, we can reflect the light of Christ by communing with him and doing good works. We then not only experience personal illumination but can also direct this light to those who sit in darkness. One of many good works which we are called to is hospitality, meaning “to be a friend of and love the stranger.” With Christ as our example of perfect hospitality, we can create spaces where people feel welcomed and loved, open ourselves to our neighbors, forgive others, and not pass judgment on our brothers and sisters. Through communion with Christ and true hospitality, may the Church of Christ become a “city set in a hill” to the glory of our “Father who is in heaven.”
