Khanna says the Israeli government lied to cover up the soldiers’ involvement. If that is accurate, the issue is not confusion. It is state protection for organized violence.Misdirection Is the PointThe right-wing reflex here was immediate: pivot from armed detention of an elected U.S. lawmaker to whether Khanna “blew off” an offer to meet former hostages. That is classic misdirection. It recasts the victim as rude, the armed men as misunderstood, and the state’s conduct as a matter of tone. Laura Loomer and Rep. Greg Murphy, by siding with the Israeli government over Khanna, helped launder that inversion.The Press Can Be Used as a ShieldThe New York Post’s anonymous claim about Khanna skipping a hostage meeting fits the same pattern. An unattributed leak, likely from officials, is deployed to muddy the waters and shift attention away from the detention itself. That is not reporting as much as strategic narrative sabotage. When institutions cannot defend the facts, they move to impeach the witness.This Is Settler ImpunityThe source notes more than 700,000 Israeli settlers illegally living in the West Bank, rising violence over the past year, 1,732 documented incidents of settler violence in a 12-month period, and at least 15 Americans killed by Israeli settlers since 2003. Those numbers describe a political order, not a series of anomalies. If armed settlers can detain journalists and an American member of Congress while soldiers allegedly assist them, then “extremism” is not outside the system. It is one of its operating features.The PatternThe broader lesson is simple: when power relies on unlawful domination, it always tries to rename coercion as misunderstanding and accountability as incitement. That is true in occupied territory and in the domestic politics that excuse it. The democratic position is not to flatter the people carrying the guns or the institutions covering for them.
