Calls for new SUH block to be named after Sligo nurse
Cllr Edel McSharry has called for the new 42-bed healthcare block at Sligo University Hospital to be named after pioneering nurse, senator and national leader Linda Kearns MacWhinney. The Sligo woman played a major role in Irish history, from establishing a Red Cross hospital during the 1916 Rising to shaping national health and nursing policy in the early years of the State.Cllr McSharry says naming the new block would recognise the often-overlooked contribution of women and nurses to healthcare and public life, and inspire future generations.Speaking to Ocean FM News, Cllr Edel McSharry says it’s a chance to finally recognise the value and leadership of nurses who made a massive contribution but were never properly acknowledged.
