“Calm in the Chaos”

from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus

July 21, 2026  Daily Devotional:  “Calm in the Chaos”Psalm 29:11 "The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace." The reality check - Take a look at the verses that precede this one. Psalm 29 isn't set in a quiet, serene garden. It describes a massive, terrifying storm. Davidwrites about the voice of the Lord breaking giant cedar trees, striking with flashes of lightning, shaking the entire desert, and stripping forests bare. It describes an environment of absolute chaos, noise, and overwhelming power. Then, right at the very end of this tempest, we hit verse 11. It is a striking contrast. The same God who commands the wild, destructive thunder turns to His people and hands them two things: strength and peace. Notice the order of the gifts. God gives strength first, then peace. Often, we want peace so we can stop being strong. We pray for our circumstances to quiet downso we can finally relax. But God's peace doesn't depend on a lack of trouble. He gives us the supernatural strength to stand tall while the wind is howling, and inside that strength, we find a deep, unshakeable calm. God does not promise to always remove the storm. He promises to infuse His people with the inner fortitude required to stand firm right in the middle of it. It is apromise of resilience. He doesn’t always quiet the storm around you immediately. Instead, He quiets the storm inside you. Ultimately, Psalm 29:11 means that the ultimate expression of God’s absolute sovereignty and power is the gentle care He takes of His people. He rules the universe with thunder, but He rules your life with a blessing of strength and quiet assurance. Whatever "storm" you are facing right now—whether it’s a chaotic schedule, a difficult relationship, financial stress, or internal anxiety—remember that the Lord sits enthroned over the flood. The noise of your world cannot overpower the whisper of His promise. Where are you trying to manufacture your own strength? Hand it over. Let Him give you His. What area of your life feels most chaotic? Picture the God of thethunderclaps stepping into that specific space, not to strike, but to bless you with His presence.
