Calvinism - Part 2: Total Depravity

from Undone Podcast

Part 2 of our "Calvinism" series focuses on the first point in the popular acrostic: "T.U.L.I.P.", also known as the "doctrines of grace", or the "5 points of Calvinism". "Total Depravity" is a doctrine that many evangelical Christians would probably verbally affirm, on its face, without actually understanding all that it entails. This was certainly the case for many of us. We agreed that man has a sinful nature, that he is inclined towards sin, that we're saved by grace through faith, and that we must repent and believe in Christ or we will perish in our sins. But what if the bible actually teaches that fallen man cannot do that? That he isn't willing or able to lift even a finger towards God? What would be the implications? This was the burning question that our church began wrestling with at the early stages of our reformation. What seemed at first to be a minor issue of doctrinal nitpicking, soon turned into a snowball that eventually became an avalanche demolishing much of our theology. All to the glory of God! We pray this episode is a blessing to all who will listen. May our understanding of who we are only serve to magnify God's grace in our hearts. And may we never grow tired of hearing about it!
