Dae’Quan Wright could be headed from an NFL roster straight back to college football, and his situation exposes a much bigger problem with the sport. Wright spent the summer in NFL training camp with the Cleveland Browns before being waived. If he clears waivers, he plans to join Lane Kiffin at LSU for the 2026 season. The issue isn’t players getting paid. College athletes should be able to maximize their value. The problem is what happened after college football changed: nobody established meaningful guardrails. Wright is the latest example of a system where roster spots, eligibility, NIL and player movement continue to evolve while nobody seems to know exactly where the boundaries are. At the center of it all is the NCAA. It saw massive change coming, failed to create a workable framework and left schools, coaches and players to figure it out themselves. Now Pandora’s box is open, and college football has to figure out who is actually responsible for governing the sport. Cash App is a financial services platform, not a bank.
