MTV brought people together in a way no leader, government, or religion ever could. It created a connection through music that crossed borders and cultures. The songs and lyrics became part of who we were, forming a shared bond.Thirty years later, innovation brought us social media, which transformed how we communicate. Social media's greatest power is its ability to connect individuals across the world instantly. For the first time in history, millions of people could communicate with each other at the click of a button without ever meeting in person.While one TV channel connected us, social media has done the complete opposite. Since social media entered our lives, society has become more polarized. Fringes and extremists have become louder than ever, making people believe in a fake reality where they appear to be the majority. We see more global conflicts, wars, terror attacks, and violence.Instead of using these innovative tools for people's well-being, we see algorithms amplifying hate, resentment, and violence for financial gain. Instead of fostering compassion and understanding by learning about new cultures, connecting us with people from places we have never visited, sharing ideas, encouraging creativity, and improving education, social media has divided us more than ever before.Current social media algorithms fuel polarization and conflict. Keyboard arguments escalate into real-world violence, replacing meaningful discussions and advocacy with flames of hate. Instead of using creativity and the arts to advocate for beliefs or ideas, we see violence everywhere. The music fades away, and instead, we hear the loud voices of gunfire, bombings, and missiles.People who refused to wear a mask during COVID-19 now cover their faces in protests to advocate for their beliefs. Shouldn't they be proud of what they are advocating for? If so, why do they need to hide their faces? When leading music artists sang “Heal the World,” they sang it proudly, showing their faces and connecting people around the world to their message.Social media could teach us about each other but chose to set us apart. History shows that humans have found solutions during impossible times and under all circumstances to overcome complicated problems. Humanity has built bridges to pave ways where nature placed obstacles. Social media companies built the infrastructure for humanity to communicate and control the distribution of information through their algorithms. But at the very beginning of the AI revolution, can social media companies still lead what is happening on their platforms, or will algorithms shift beyond their control, leaving them helpless to fix the core systems built a decade ago to maximize the profit that now backfires on them?Similar to MTV, which didn’t invent TV broadcasting or the home TV set but led the way in educating generations about music, something similar could happen to social media. These companies built the infrastructure and paved the way, but currently, none of them know how to drive it.
