The lower house of the Czech Parliament passed a radical plan supported by governing party ANO to lower income taxes as of January 2021. While the legislation is yet to be approved by the Czech Senate and signed by the president, it has already sparked controversy for its questionable economic objectives as well as the fact the law was passed with the support of opposition parties instead of ANO’s social-democratic coalition partner. Is Prime Minister Andrej Babiš trying to secure voter support in the runup to next year’s elections or can the tax cut plan bring major benefits to overturn the pandemic-driven recession?
