Can I labor without an epidural? This is a question I hear quite a bit. I am here to tell you that YES! You Can! Perhaps you have decided to not have an epidural. I am so excited for you! The natural birth process without pain medicine is a beautiful process. The pain. The hard work. Is part of what really helps you connect with your newborn baby. But maybe you are questioning yourself. You are thinking. Can I labor without an epidural? I want you to image the two of you have just gone through this hard, long, and incredible journey. Now you are on the other side of that mountain celebrating your natural birth victory! It takes power and preparation. So, I personally would love to (well, I am going to) encourage you on this journey to having a natural birth. With 80% of our population of women delivering having an epidural I know it is a hard decision because when you go out and talk to other women they are not supportive. There are not a lot of women encouraging you to have a delivery without an epidural. And I am going to tell you a little bit about my journey to natural birth because you know what?... I had A LOT of women telling me that I COULD NOT do it without an epidural. They would tell me that I might think that I want to do it, but when I get to that point I will get weak and give in. And that was HARD for me because I knew I WANTED to give birth without an epidural. I knew I was made to deliver a baby and women all over the world for thousands of years have been doing it without an epidural. Then I met one woman! She asked me about my pregnancy, and I started to explain to her about my desire to deliver a baby without an epidural and with no pain relief. She looked at me… and she was about my age and had a little boy of her own. She said… “Honey, You can DO THIS! It is a beautiful thing. Of course, there is a RING OF FIRE, and it burns, and it hurts! But it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I have heard so many horror stories about delivers but my delivery was so beautiful and the pain made it all the more fulfilling and exciting to hold my baby after the delivery.” Then the SECOND thing I want to encourage you with.... I watched a movie one month before my delivery. That movie was Mama Mia 2! That movie came out the summer I delivered and I went to see the movie with my husband. There is this scene where the main character (Donna) is delivering her baby she is on this island in Greece and there is nobody around. She is living in this little farmhouse… the music is playing… she is laboring… she is sweating… She pushes and she has her delivery and it is just SO BEAUTIFUL! I walked out of the movie theater and I said to my husband… “If she can do it in the middle of an island in Greece with nobody around and nobody’s support. Then I can do it without an epidural in an actual hospital with support!” I tell you this story because I want to encourage you to find your story.
