Can We Trust the Apostles' Testimony About Jesus? | 2 Peter 1:16–18

Our text today is 2 Peter 1:16-18: For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased," we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. — 2 Peter 1:16-18 Peter knew that some people would dismiss the message of Jesus as a religious hoax. So he makes his position clear: the apostles did not follow "cleverly devised myths" when they proclaimed the power and coming of Christ. Peter had seen the glory of Jesus for himself. On the Mountain of Transfiguration, he watched Jesus's appearance change before his eyes. He heard the Father declare that Jesus was his beloved Son. For a brief moment, Peter was given a preview of the majesty that will be fully revealed when Christ returns. Honestly, I am a little jealous of his sneak peek. But the point is, the Christian hope is not built on Peter's imagination. It rests on eyewitness testimony, the most powerful testimony we have still today. This matters because Christian faith is sometimes described by outsiders as belief without evidence. But biblical faith is confidence in what God has revealed through real events and trustworthy witnesses. Peter was not offering an inspiring idea about Jesus. He was reporting what he had seen and heard. There are moments when I feel the inclination to treat the return of Christ as some distant doctrine rather than a coming reality. Peter's testimony reminds me that the King whose glory he witnessed will one day be revealed to everyone. Jesus may appear irrelevant to the world right now, but Peter saw beyond the veil. He saw Christ's ultimate majesty which is our reality. Folks, we have not stood on that mountain, but we have the testimony of those who did. That witness, Peter, calls us to live with confidence, obedience, and expectation. The present realities of this world are not final. Jesus Christ is the beloved Son, the glorious King, and he is coming again. Peter saw his majesty, and he wants us to live in that reality till Jesus comes again. ASK THIS: Why does Peter's eyewitness testimony matter for our confidence in Jesus? Do you tend to live as though Christ's return is a distant idea or a coming reality? What would change today if you remained conscious that Jesus is the glorious King?
