Canada-U.S. Diplomatic Tensions Escalate | Calgary News

Canada and the U.S. are locked in a heated diplomatic standoff that’s gone beyond tariffs into full-blown online warfare, with Prime Minister Mark Carney demanding decorum after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mocked Canada with jokes about submarines and tourist attractions. Carney called the remarks undignified and unhelpful, stressing the need for serious dialogue as trade tensions simmer. Meanwhile, Carney celebrated Liberal wins in three key byelections — including a historic Quebec victory — while dodging questions about his future leadership, pledging loyalty to his party and country without confirming re-election plans. The feud underscores how economic disputes are now fueling public relations battles, testing the resilience of North American ties.
