In a world of pollution, degradation of human bodies, neglect of refugees, and a lack of care for the poor, among other tragedies, Mother Teresa penned this precise and profound insight in an essay on working towards peace. Her words reveal her reflections on an underlying epidemic in humanity, and particularly in the global West: throwaway culture. We inhabit a world where unwanted items and unwanted people are disposed of, neglected, or overlooked. We’ve forgotten we belong to one another, and our economic, political, social, and sometimes even religious spaces characterize such disposability. What can we do in this sort of world? Where can we begin unworking our throwaway culture? As it turns out, there is great wisdom contained within the pages of the bible that can help us make sense of and navigate these questions. Throwaway cultures aren’t new in human history; rather, as we look through the pages and stories of the bible, we find the wisdom of God and of Jesus speaking directly to similar dynamics across history and providing a way to navigate them in our own times.
