Cancer Oral Side Effect Support with Jill Meyer-Lippert

from Navigating Cancer TOGETHER · host Talaya, On the Other Side

Jill Meyer-Lippert is a Registered Dental Hygienist of nearly 30 years. She took an interest early in her career in the oral health concerns of people who were diagnosed with cancer. She created a one-of-a-kind online resource for cancer patients, family caregivers, and healthcare providers to reduce harmful oral side effects of treatments that can potentially affect treatment outcomes and quality of life throughout survivorship. A few highlights from the show: 1. The oral-systemic link is the link between the health of your mouth and your overall health. 2. Yearly, thorough oral cancer screenings should be performed by your dentist. Not just a visual screening but also tactile and feeling the tissues. 3. Places to get affordable dental care if you don't have insurance: (a) community dental clinics with sliding scales, (b) dental schools, (c) virtual or teledentistry care. 4. Do oral screenings at home. I did not have any prior health concerns or issues. Fast forward, the dreaded cancer diagnosis opened my eyes, introduced me to my purpose, and lead me to where I am today. As a Cancer Doula, I use my 10-years of experience with cancer to support and guide others diagnosed with cancer. Many people are not familiar with what a cancer doula is. Think of me as a personal health care advocate.
