Murphy is a priest of the Diocese of Waterford & Lismore and has served as chaplain to the Irish Defence Forces for 12 years, based at Mellows’ Barracks (formerly Renmore Barracks) in Galway, including six overseas deployments to Syria, Lebanon and Israel. He came to national prominence in 2024 when he survived an attempted murder by a young radicalised Muslim man and publicly offered forgiveness to his attacker, citing countless blessings on the night of the attack.
