Hello there and welcome to the little bill my I'm Tom Nolan and I'm very excited. I'm Mario Ponzio and this is a horror movie episode Whoa, I'm so excited. I kind of came together in like a couple days. I mean I worked this out secretly I just kind of like you know as like a couple hard movies are coming out How do I trick Tom into making a horror movie episode and I did it well?

You know it's it's one of these we talked about in the last episode I have one Horror movie trivia for the past six years guys. We're gonna do it and it's gonna sound like it too. Yeah, it's gonna be terrible We Yeah, I will put money on that you put money on the bad boy to say I don't know a lot of money That would be like how much big you don't even want to know a ton of Brilliant and it's something like that's too much. I say they make ten million dollars in it a google play I say make ten million dollars in theaters after releasing on the car.

That would be bad. I mean it will be it will be But if it makes only ten million dollars in theaters that would be bad. That would be terrible That will not be a success The first movie made In opening weekend if it makes ten million dollars That's not even like suicides wide money and the suicide's wide confounding no one understands what the hell happened with suicides squad Because the one of them was we're gonna talk about keeps making a little bit of money enough to like kind of be a success So it's not just like the availability thing that's really doesn't make money. Yeah weird it does Yeah, because it's not stupid like free guy.

No, I No, but Ryan Reynolds is it's has to be stupid I'm the one person who's like gonna stand here and be like you're all wrong about Ryan I'm fucking sucks those dead movies are terrible for their bad, but you keep talking money I know but doesn't it is any good. We were all right about Ryan Reynolds for 20 years and all of a sudden They're like no you're wrong and everyone's like yeah, I guess we're wrong you might be wrong because he keeps making money But yeah, I was wondering a Billy Jordan's but I can't remember that lyric you may be right I may be crazy, right making a deep world. I love Dave's world That was the saddest part of the enemies just to talk about something we said we were gonna talk about when you realize Like a quarter of the cast of night court died last year Oh my god, you just have like that is oh my god. They did so are you post-eyed Charles Robinson died And Harry's and Dad Harry's and Dad's he's heard died two years ago or but Richard Mull still taking in Richard Mull is John America's you know like it's a Richard Mull he's a We're doing it.

We're doing tomorrow. But anyways being a rich and mold very excited Yeah, speaking of rich and mold is he a good horror movie efficient and auto in house the movie your house He's seen that he's from house. Yeah. Oh, yeah The Japanese movie that house But yeah, we're doing a horror movie episode.

I'm very excited. Yeah, this is good I don't know if you can't see me right now, but I'm actually shaking But I think the problem here another problem all three things are our movies Yeah, the exciting thing is that I'm also kind of excited because all of these movies you did something to be interested in a horror movie Yeah, because I suggested that's like holy shit or we're doing a hard because we were gonna do it We were gonna watch a movie and then you were like this movie is like a crime macho with like Movies I was like and you're like this movie reminds me of this movie And I was like oh that movie came out this year and that oh that movies available on all streaming services for 399 like I'll watch that and then I watch it and I was like holy shit They were together and they weren't then we got the surprise drop of our first movie we were gonna do and I was like perfect Let's just do it. Let's do it horror movies three horror movies a whole episode of First one we're gonna talk about oh, we should go to the theater for yeah And it just dropped on streaming last week. I think this week.

Oh, yeah, that's okay. So that is Kia costa near the costa's candy man All began the story of candy man walk around hands and our candy to the neighborhood kid Hey a couple of kids get raised a place in the candy Please come around that's my soul truth. Thanks for your on your knees More razor blades and more candy So these were candy man and he candy man the whole damn guy If you look at the candy man You ask me stay away So candy man actually maybe you should do candy man I got it. You know why because maybe you should do all these movies because they're your movies.

I know horror movies so Candyman is a direct sequel to the 1992 I want to say Horror movie directed by Bernard Rose, which by the way, you haven't seen it the best part movies ever It is the tale, you know the people trying to somebody looking into the urban legends of Chicago's history specifically the urban legends of The Cabrini green housing development this film is Right next to the entire story of like today to Virginia Madsen for a dark rose movie where you know Candyman was a real person and sort of thing and all that's been forgotten in modern Chicago has been gentrified to history and the our lead actor Anthony McCoy is an art struggling artist who's trying to find like a Story that he can like mean into and he finds a story of the Candyman Not the Candyman that we know of not the Daniel Robot. Candyman, but a different candy man A candy man from the 1970s who was just kind of a guy who had offered candy to people and by the Chicago PD had been beaten to death basically Has he researches us he becomes attached to the history of it the story of it he gets stung by a B He slowly becomes Candyman himself And interestingly enough the movie kind of does a nice melding between 1992 version where Anthony McCoy is revealed to be the baby From the Virginia Madsen, but also revealed to be kind of just like this self-efficient artist himself ah and so Things kind of melt together interestingly enough William Burke played by Coleman Domingo also plays somebody who had seen the Candyman not the Daniel Robot talk Candyman, but the offering of the 70s one like the next guy was that was that was that any man that was a Sherman fields the Sherman fields Candyman and is hoping to bring him kind of back in a really rough third act twist And it's I'm okay with the third act. I look a little at that point I was like okay, I I'm willing to let some of this happen because it seems very appropriate It was missing connecting points to get there But it seemed like where it was going anyway But ultimately the story is about like this Anthony McCoy trying to unite with his past of the Candyman story with Daniel Robot With Sherman fields with just his history in general. He doesn't realize he was from green green green He just kind of body grew up in the West the lower sorry the south side basically And things kind of meld together in the end where Everything cold asks in the fact that he is going to become the new Candyman I'm gonna show everybody yeah, and that's where the movie falls apart for me is the fact that this third act is is rough I think Gahal Abdul-Mateen is amazing in this role Anthony McCoy's great the first two acts as movie are stellar Tiana Paris is fucking terrific everything everything about these lead actors works look like everything about like Nathan Stewart Jared has his Has her brother is great and who's your boyfriend's name as a Kyle Kaminsky?

That's great. He is fantastic You really care about these characters and that's under watch when you care about like a horror movie character and unfortunately the third act kind of like devolves into Necessity to get to the end well and so I mean that's it is an necessity to get to the end or is it like a two Considered necessity to tie directly to like the 19 You know because they had been kind of doing that you know I mean they've referenced Excuse me meeting pizza and drinking beer while somebody is doing something because they reference different I'm at his character's story in the middle of the middle of the million coming back right then the other McCoy um so it's not It's not like it's not there. It's they've been able to bridge it through which is not said there's a character named Bridget They'd be able to kind of bridge the current to the to the past um I thought pretty well um and then they decided like it needed to be like very direct for some reason like it needed to be just exactly yeah Like it needed to tie in a way that like through that while you're watching the movie you're like it doesn't need to be It's not like this tightly did you watch the Bernard Rose movie in the past like have you sure? So the Bernard Rose movie has like that fucking terrific opening sequence of Chicago above That's directly reflected in this movie Chicago from below These two movies are like synergized so well Yeah, and it was it was a bummer to me to see like need a cost of kind of like What about this movie is need a cost that feels like she doesn't have enough courage to like make a movie because like I feel Is no she fucking nails it.

Yeah, she's like Uncomfortable with like doing I don't know that makes sense. Yeah, I don't think it's her being uncomfortable I think it's if she's uncomfortable. It's because Jordan Peele is there kind of telling like directing her like What to do it almost like Kevin Feige like type thing where like this is IP or something And he needs to go in a certain direction for whatever like the second candy man is gonna be I don't really have a concept of what that could be based on anything I didn't I didn't want it to be anything But I almost feels like it has to be because if it's not what the hell was the point of this movie because you could have done Something totally different you could have given me another 20 minutes and done something really meaningful at the end That wasn't just kind of like it's toaditad CGI deep fake face My under some bees my biggest issue with this movie is um, there is to some extent I'd This guy sound weird, but um there's like a female gaze issue with this movie for me where um looking at Anthony McCoy shirtless Constantly, I'm just like uncomfortable with how how much we look at him shirtless and prone and I feel as though there's an extent to that That's trying to say like he's vulnerable and whatnot But it doesn't feel as though it's serving the story It feels as though it's like just drawing this like this guy's hot and he's sure Yeah, I feel like if she if someone's argued that it's serving the story You could say that like you know by the end of the movie he has no shirt on in half of his movie is covered Or half his body is covered in these kind of like high Yeah, in dense and stuff like that, but it is not right like his arm is covered never his body is too Yeah, but at the end there when Coleman Dingamego cuts his hand off and jabs the thing in there Yeah, um his like this whole one side of his body that he got bit on is all popped up So even when he goes to his mother's house, um, she puts his hand on the space I mean you can see it the whole you can see it the whole time But then she sees it and just kind of points it out so his face is all his like faces off up And yeah, um the vulnerability thing is real. I think it's one of these things to where um Yaya Abdul-Mateen is is in tears to that point and and They're fucking they're great.

They're great. But I think it's a weird I think we're in a weird space generationally where I think it we want everything to be very casual I think the idea that like someone with a his body type would be super comfortable just like having no shirt on is not like Weird at all, um, but it's also one of those things where like he's old but he's not that old you know I mean and he he comes off as not an old soul but like experienced I think that's one of the I think this movies major flaw for me is actually like The structure of the story because I think there's things that like they felt like they needed to do they didn't have to do Like there's no reason that we need to be introduced to like I know they want to save the the mother thing for the Vanessa Williams Kind of reveal but from a story perspective. It's probably important that we have met his mother before It's probably important that we understand a little bit of the nature of Tiana Paris's characters dad's art And how that kind of factors into like everything that happens. I think all that works though It works, but it's it's I think what starts to happen And I think it's to what you said like in the intro I think what starts to happen is this movie seems to feel very tossed off Like they're just by the end of the movie They're just tossing things in to kind of try to coalesce some of the character development stuff and Some of the themes into whatever is gonna come into the third act They want an emotional affect for the third act they haven't necessarily earned it Yes, exactly and it seems like they're just there you know to use a reference of the movie It almost seems like a bonfire effect where they're just kind of like finding stuff and then just kind of like throw any throwing it in there To try to make this virus big as possible basic question like whether or not that third act twist the twist with a William Burke Golden Domingo like being with the villain was not like something That they did because they had to get this certain emotional affect for the end Well, I feel so but we talked about it downstairs before we did it and like it felt like they I'm gonna assume that there is I haven't heard anything about the idea that like you know There is to cost a cut or something where like a studio took it away from her and kind of made their own because they did they made the wrong Decisions and she should say something if that's the case it almost seems like there's 20 minutes missing out of this movie So one of the things I appreciated about the idea of this movie is its economy is that it functions so Crispy and perfectly much though like but like for the first 40 minutes you're like it's hitting all these notes and it's not wasting any fucking time And it's getting through like the art piece.

It's getting through the relationship piece It's getting through all these different it's getting through even kind of the Candyman piece getting through the gentrification stuff I mean I hate when they I fucking really hate in movies This is one of the reason that maybe question the structure when like an idea and has never occurred to a main character until some other Secondary character just mentions for no reason to the main character like what the movies gonna be about for the rest of the movie Because there was no reason for him to mention he was just like y'all want to hear a ghost story like out of nowhere And he's like I'm gonna tell you the story about what this movies about and you're just gonna like why did this happen? And it kind of works kind of like the writing if the writing was tighter and more flesh out They could have been having a conversation that got them closer that instead of being like I don't know what to write I don't know what to make art about let me tell you a ghost story I will make art about that and then they kind of it just kind of goes in there and most and everyone's so charismatic and the Filmmaking is so good from like a shot perspective. It's really really good. I mean need to cost it like it's a fucking run It's um I did not see like little woods is not this little woods is a good movie But it's not like I saw it's usually like I saw it seen little with this is Yeah, fantastic and she's for most of the time she does a really good directing job But I think it's part of the problem where it's just some of this What's the goal here is the goal to make a movie about these themes using the Candyman IP to like address those Like very modern themes that were being addressed in 1992 as the basis for interesting horror movie Which are being which I guess were very relevant in 1992 But you know today when it's like front page news every day about like you know black lives matter and all this other stuff And especially in a place like Chicago where like nothing seems to ever be getting any better in Chicago in terms of We're initial scene is like bringing something new to the field right?

This movie in ultimately is about the Candyman movie and you it almost feels it just the ending feels super cheap Because I spent all this time kind of building up these bigger themes and it's even a thing I can't even right and establishing them as like I think one of the things we talked about is the idea that like the people that die in this movie in relation to the Candyman's story Are people that don't understand it? They're white people for one They're people that are kind of taking the the urban legend mythology for granted as a kind of titillation rather than something I'm gonna die are they're white right like People right like I say you know But yeah absolutely but they set it up in the sense that like if you say Candyman five times You know you die in Tiana Paris the end of the movies is Candyman five times and she doesn't die because she gets it She's right right after like fuck the blue life matter people. It's a great right But I would also say to be fair I guess that like That cop didn't seem that cop is being a fucking asshole because in the movie he's supposed to be a fucking asshole Yeah, it's one of those things where like if something totally fucking weird happens like Yeah, I have to you know, what's his name? Anthony um he is dead Ish Get shot I get shot by police and then they shoot him when he's in just Tiana Paris is a little stupid Which is really stupid and then the guy's like you could be doing this or you could be doing this Do we really think that Tiana Paris?

I think do they legitimately believe that like this woman is the mastermind of like all these different murders like she was at dinner When that other woman was murdered and there's a bunch of people that will tell like and then this is like nip Picky shit, but it's the stuff that like what it means it leans too far into its like Theme right when the movie ends the way that ends You're just kind of like you can't help but nitpick because you're like why did you do any of the other really cool stuff? You did if you just wanted to make a candy man like origins a new candy man or just I appreciate like the ending of it Where she like brings candy man to kill everybody, but you have to earn that and it doesn't right that well And then it and then it erases whatever coolness it has by doing the Tony's on the debate Yeah, you know tell everyone's like cool. We will tell everyone someone's still gonna have to answer for all these cop murders And the only person that they have is one Handcuffs so like how is this gonna work? You know it's a brown manuals Maybe they'll do something like that maybe the second candy man Well, that's that's my issue with it my issue with it is like there's a really solid movie that's arguing in between like not necessarily black lives matter thing but like like Black prejudice and whatnot but art prejudice as well like the fact that entire first act deals with Anthony McCoy trying to become like an artist And like doing that in the face of like him being a black man.

Mm-hmm. Oh fucking cool Yeah, then they just like drops it right like when that first like two kills happen that first kills amazing Girl yeah, the joint division girl. Yeah, the joint division girl like that From a nice not CG I but from like a makeup perspective that kills great And then like the other guy that's solid and it kind of just drops it It's kind of like a really typical kind of like black versus white although it's like had it been like a black artist versus like white Privilege thing that I watch them Like that's a much better movie. We're like you have I don't say black privilege, but you have You know like like a black artist a person who's kind of In generating himself to white culture.

Mm-hmm. He's participating in like the the upper-class art community Yeah, and but he's now seen as a killer You know as because he's a black man like versus all of what you're seeing I think I thought that was such a such a better movie I got really excited about it and it's kind of like no I agree with you It was I kind of felt the same way to like later and then we go and kind of see his art And I thought he was working on self portraits And I was like that's a really interesting idea like having these self portraits to generate from like really crisp like lying charcoal drawings of eyes of his face and then kind of Turning into this Francis Bacon esque like monstrosities But like all being himself But then when you show like a very Tony Todd looking face in it He's representing all past Candyman's because he's just like another in a line of these you know enforcers almost like these these these justice keepers These make writer types as I go say um yeah, who cares like why can't we just focus on him? Like let's just focus on the character Why do we have to focus on them the the constructed? Artificial mythology of the first movie which actually is a good movie and there's a lot of mythology there But like why do you have to make a whole movie of that?

I don't pretend like this movie is not about that movie and then ultimately reveal that this movie is just about that and it worked like this movie worked as an affront to that movie because Abdul-Mantine has like such a Statute as kind of figure it himself or you you could have done anything with them. What is this one? Like he sees such a he's such a charismatic. Yeah, it's charismatic like one of the best performances of the year I think personally it's just in terms of yeah performances of your in terms of charisma.

Yeah for sure But like you could have done anything with that before like the last time I saw him was like say yeah We think Tony Todd I was like I don't want him to be replaced with my dad right yeah Yeah, yeah, you can have like him being Tony time being referenced some now But I don't want Tony Todd in this like by the end of the movie like when they show like the Tony Todd He's like well that was that sucks. Um But yeah, I mean the last time we saw him was in trial of Chicago 7 and he was buried under a bunch of erin Sordin nonsense and horrible Prosthetic hair I saw I see him in the you know the trailers for Matrix I don't like I'm excited to see him Yeah, he was really good in the in the watchman show because he was mr. Manhattan in the new watchman movie or a new Not movie that's limited see yeah, and he was like excellent that too. He's he's one of He's gonna be one of those people that we see a lot of in that you know as he starts to kind of build his Credentials he's not gonna be one of those people at plays characters gonna just become a star at some point Because he's so fucking so in this movie should have been that but it was unwilling to commit to his character enough to allow it Yeah, that was my apprehension this movie was the fact that like I watched it and I was like he had a costume You're like this was a great movie, but he had a costume wasn't comfortable with doing it Yeah, I feel like you got hamster on there so I feel like you're like I feel like it was an industrial like a Jordan Peele industrial complex.

No, which is I don't really blame him Like I feel like he's been working on this for a while Um, and he's still making it for a screen to this replay is not good enough to like do anything But that's what I'm saying is that I feel like this was made because the movie is so well directed and so well shot And so well acted as a viewer you think you kind of forgive some of like the non nuance of the script and Well, you're allowed you just kind of allow yourself to go for this very aesthetically pleasurable ride until the themes and the ultimate desires of the Filmmakers of studios kind of overlap you would agree though that movie kind of like loses its plot in the bathroom sequence Like how did not be the bathroom everything before the bathroom sequence the movie is like on track with what's trying to do And afterwards it kind of like tries of all that my bathroom sequence just rose everything off my problem with the bathroom sequence is two-fold is One we've already seen maybe it's a real thing too much of a body number. It's like it's trying to build up body number and it's Kid no reason like yeah, and it's um it's also The booshiness of that girl is I guess we're supposed to find her in contrast or in Yeah, we're supposed to find the compare her to like the art critic and the art dealer, but she's just a kid She doesn't fucking know shit. I'm not sure why she should be held responsible for like the gentrification of like Nothing's already done really well with the um the girl the um like the The history post-grad or whatever the girl gets her throat slid like that character that characters there the first victim of the movie Oh the jointed girl. Yeah, yeah, like she's the one she is One more kills that was my other problem with that with that with that scene I don't need that the sheet of blood is Take me right out of it looks like someone's pouring red velvet cake batter Also, I was like a horror movie fan I don't like has a guy who likes adding body number to a movie that it didn't work.

It just was like Not to it. Yeah, and it was a movie that that's a problem This is a problem the movie's problem is main problem is its unintentional contradictions in that the movie was made so intentionally That there's some weirdly gratuitous things in there that take that detract from the power of those very intentional scenes If only that retrudising that happened in a prison cell All right, if it happened just in a jail cell, it would have been controlled I would have watched it like this is this is perfect I've seen that people are kind of pointing to as like great. They love that scene I really dislike that scene like tremendously like Not even because it was like badly done even though it was It's because it's like the tone of the movie. Oh, no, the tone of the movie changes It's horribly on that scene is horribly unearned based on like the tone of the rest of the movie and that movie we're talking What do you mean?

I mean, we'll talk about it right now Mario. We're talking about the new James Juan something Malignant Okay, kids let me crack over this beer and so And a bell wall is an actress and she's like, you know, she's got she's got some some things going on with her Hectic I guess and a really abusive husband and that abusive husband is fucking with her and that abusive husband throws her against the wall and He should not have done that because it unleashes something a tooth monster, you know Yeah, the TV yeah It was a way better and Actually horrible Teethas just just bucks her it's gonna come upstairs into the film tower I will watch her and they're like good job. Yes, you know She gets a she gets beat up a bit and her husband gets killed Yeah, and then some other people get killed killed in like his bones in his arms or in his shoulders Just like stick out and you're just like I do think those bones in his chest with that shaped whatever You know some more people get killed Annabelle also is like this isn't cool. There's something weird going on there's some other weird stuff that happens and eventually relearn You know the Annabelle Wallace was adopted She wasn't born.

She was adopted by her And what's a total mind or her revelation my God And then we keep going on with this movie. Yeah, like another 40 minutes and it turns out She has a conjoined twin That's in her head in the back of her head like a little like Voldemort And then they cut off his arms only I guess we're gonna push him into the back of the head Yeah, we'll just push we'll push a human half of a human head into another head and it will be fine to be fine You know that this movie is intentionally doing this. This is where you're gonna do the negative review They know it's fine. It's James.

Why I'm doing this on purpose When we get to it is that like how I get that but every other choice that he's made up until this point makes up It's that revelation just the worst but it turns out, you know That's a conjoined twin that is evil. I got buried into her brain and she's a killer herself her conjoined twins killer Her conjoined twin controls her joints knows how to like break himself out of the back of her head Undo some cool killing and then bring himself back into her head It's very necessary because they've established that he's part of her brain. I hate this movie, but I also love this movie I know no no no no actually actually hate this movie. I just you can love it if you want.

No, I hate this movie I don't want to judge you. No, I hate this movie. I I legitimately hate this movie because So James one smart director. This is gonna be me doing a horror movie thing James one smart horror movie director No, he's doing he's trying to direct an able for rare movie and early like 1980s movies trying to basket case But able for rarer knows what he's doing and knows what he's doing with a dirty movie, right?

It's like Mrs. 1945 miss 1945. Oh, you never see that no, but I know it is It's gross. It's uncomfortable.

I hate watching it But it's really well done But the able for air movies from that era feel gross and they're they're really well done You know what they're also not is like trying to be funny while also trying to be serious Absolutely, but like they're well. I'm trying to say it's like they're well done in the sense of like there is a control of yeah Yeah, James one does not have a control this movie James one is a really solid hard director James one Directed the shit out of the depth that's he directed the shit out of dead silence, but he's too slick He's too clean There's an entire shot in this movie that shot from above where you're watching animal Wallace who's one of the worst actresses alive You know Chris fine if you want to but it's like Mary or something there they're dating. Oh, it's not from above and like it follows them other on like a bunch It's going like this is so clean so precise and it's so wrong This movie is wrong in the sense of like when the twist happens, which I think is fun I just watch it going like yeah But the movie that has been built up to this point doesn't work because it's it's a dirty twist it's a twist in which You know you don't trust your you don't trust your audience. You just so like oh, yeah The monster is in the back of her head typically would work right but like you made such a clean such a precise movie this point that it fails Yeah, and but the cleanness and the precise is the wrong is the total wrong tone For a movie that can't be taken seriously on any level so the tone of the movie is 100% serious Absolutely, but is just is bucking terrible So it's not played for laughs ever But everywhere that comes out of every character's mouth is literally the absolute stupidest thing that could come out of any characters Which would make it seem like he's trying to have his cake and he's trying to have his own cake and eat it too He's trying to make a serious movie else That functions as a non-serious movie and I think the problem with what that is I think you see this in something like It's expressed pretty well in Dolomite is my name where Dolomite What's the Dolomites name like the guy that plays Dolomite?

I forget about it the guy that played him is trying to make good movies and he's not It's something like or even like the room, which is you know become a non thing at this point Tommy Wiseau was not trying to make the worst movie ever He legitimately thought he was making a good movie But everything he did was totally wrong so he ended up making a hilarious movie James One is making a lot of money to make what he wants us to believe is up is like a bad movie on purpose Which is just ultimately is just ultimately bad Ultimately, it's a being boring super boring and the twist isn't even a twist because the way that the movie is so fucking serious That like you want the twist to be something Major bad shit the same right and the second that twist happened. I was like, yeah, I know I know that that the monsters in the back of her head Well, the problem with the twist is that they show too much about it So when they're like oh he pushed it into her head and you know you just assume that when she hit her head It like unleashed something but if he's never seen if he's inside her mind if he has control over her body Why does he turn his the body inside out so he can like face stuff? I mean, it's kind of funny I think that's kind of but it's only funny because it's so pointless. Yeah, but it's not sold as pointless It's sold as supposed to be like scary and mildly.

I don't think so. I think that's sold. It's funny I don't I don't think anything is moving is so funny. I think I think it's sold as No, I think it's weird sold as weird, but it's supposed to be so on the nose.

That's funny So like well, that's a whole problem. I've done I've done dead silence. Have you seen Dead Silence yet? So Dead Silence is like a really on the nose goofy horror movie that was told straight.

It's a mid-2000s horror movie. It's like his first movie after Saw and it was the object and I flop like it did not work and this felt like his attempt to do that movie again But that's what he's doing. He's not I don't think he's telling this movie seriously because he would not do that fucking action set piece In in the police, but what I'm saying is that he in his mind is all a joke Absolutely, but the movie that he made is not a joke the movie that he made is toned And functions like a really slickly made Horror movie. Oh, see I think he's all of it is a joke, but no, it's definitely a joke But what I'm saying is that he made the wrong movie to articulate with that joke.

So in in that case It's a just a complete and total failure and I think it's a bummer. It's a bummer in the sense of like has a big horror fan There's multiple moments where like humor works here that he fails on so like because the movie's not humorous So he's actually trying to do something funny like tell it actual Joker makes it actually humorous It falls flat because all the stuff that's not supposed to be humorous is like ridiculous It already ends up being just boring like when he has the sister park up against like the fucking huge cliff And it doesn't do and like she goes into the house like goes into the hospital and nothing happens She leaves the hospital. I just watches the video. That's from a horror movie standpoint.

That's funny Mm-hmm. It's funny that she like enters this like really dangerous position Finds a video in a really scary like the build-up is like oh, there's a good sex book. He happens and nothing happens She just like ends up watching the video and nothing happens funny or where James Wayne's wife the This forensic Check just like drops her glasses off and just ends up sitting there while the monster kind of like does this thing And she's kind of like does her own thing. That's kind of funny like from a horror movie standpoint Oh, it's being presented.

How's like but you think but here's a problem is that he's not commenting on anything So this is not one cup of the dead where it's a that is a really humorous and light-hearted But like very pointed commentary on like zombie films No, just like it's a side joke for nothing and it all works and this is this is so self-conscious It's like he's so in his own head. What the fuck is he doing with that action set piece in the police station? She thinks that it's supposed to be so if you're referencing able for air I think he's the movie that can't jump right into my mind when it was happening was the Warriors not because anything happens like that in the Warriors But every single one of these women is dressed in a very stereotypical like fashion for some reason of like a 70s like you know street person movie and The whole time you're watching you're just like why is like why is this happening and you know, it's a setup when it happens after it starts happening You're like oh, it's just a set up so She can kill all these people but there's so much CGI. Yeah When he's at some point he's like I used your body better than you use your body's like okay You don't have you are just like a path of a brain with teeth You don't have access to additional muscles or karate, but she has access to Extra strength and karate while or some kind of other varsity or when he's in charge of rain Where did he learn from?

Well, she's like watching karate really bummed down this movie is the kind of galley throwback where The older doctor gets stabbed in the face So you see the doctor gets stabbed in the face with really terrible CGI it cuts back to him later And you get like a really good shot of like I assume like a puppet like it has a good like Makeup face shot. It's just like you watch on. Oh, this was a better movie like this movie is so clean so What's wrong with her so Yeah, the jell-up is meant to be more of like and that's the thing It's the part with like being influenced by a style is that like the giallo stuff is representative of like a very specific kind of aesthetic And it's already about giallo movie. Yeah soon that it does jello amazing because it's supposed to be of Supposed to be vaguely surreal.

It's supposed to have like a dream equality It's supposed to have a bear quality It's supposed to have the the aesthetic that yellow was trying to a jello giallo sorry and I was trying to Bring out in the film and this movie it doesn't have any of that it has it thinks it has it's badness It thinks that's the problem I have with this you know I guess this James Wan experiment here is that he thinks and I know he doesn't actually think this but for some reason He's decided to express this thought in this movie with the idea that what makes a jello movie a jello movie is that it stinks Or is that it's badly made and that is wrong or that's pushing limits or The limits that it's pushing here are being pushed I mean the people that are saying like the twist is so shocking here It's like have you not seen anti-Christ she cuts her fucking coliroff Have you not seen have you not seen fucking dead silence a James Wan movie where a fucking little Ghost Puppet is the villain right or have you not even seen something really totally fucked like but in a different way Then like a really fucking movie like even the like the newest asphira like which is just lost to time now apparently like nobody Think it's moving there isn't that movie is fucked up But it's not fucked up in like a body growing out of a headway It's in like a bodies aren't supposed to move like this in the natural way thing or like this music Is weird or like all this stuff is very typical jello weirdness and tone and atmosphere feel and this movie has the wrong Toner has no atmosphere and it doesn't really has any feel for what's doing It's a bummer because like he does have a lock on like doing the jello like movement like the fact that he chose like a Contortionist to do the movements of Gabriel right like that's cool as shit But he didn't mean into it. He's kind of goes like a jello Whatever right and the other bummer because like he just like he doesn't care enough I guess this is why in this takes his back to a conversation like a couple weeks ago I guess about the idea that like this movie on HBO Max works because I have HBO Max because it comes with like whatever Package I have this movie in a theater. You're not having this conversation if this movie is only available in theater Well, that's a very short mention like the feet like the mention of this movie is like if one most wisdom movies of the four It is not even though it's a goofy dumb movie Stupid it's silly. It's fun.

I guess if you if you yeah, you have the right mindset and you want nothing from it I guess it's a good time But even this I feel like you would want from it is not well like the kills aren't really very interesting And about Wallace is still one of the worst actresses in modern film. I'm gonna say that right now What else is she in the show she did she's on the money. Oh, yeah, the Tom Cruise. Yeah, Tom Cruise money That's her big film.

I can't think of what else she's done since then. Oh god. She did something else. We talked about Boss level she had that one scene in Boston.

Oh, yeah, yeah, she's not good She's not good, but that's I mean I feel like he probably cast her because she's not great I feel like the boyfriend scenario I don't even know like I'm very pro the idea that that boyfriend sucks, but I also does have Yeah, or yeah husband I hope I have no idea what the fuck either of them are talking about is he I'm assuming that the babies are dying because Gabriel is killing them. Well, but the movie brings it up right but the movie lies that the game We are eating your babies, which is one of the to be fair one of the best line right dramatic line differently wise This movie delivers which is like when I was at is that Maddy has since like Baby's is really solid line delivery from a corner with me. Yeah, absolutely And but that's I feel like she's the one character that seems in the one actress it seems like she gets it a little bit Oh, absolutely her and um George young playing the George young and I think George young and Michelle white I think the two cops kind of get it too But there to see I the reason I don't think it is maybe not it's not even their fault It's just so whether or not they get it matters not at all. They're such horrible jokes like they're written and portrayed as jokes But I feel like they're they present that's also joke again It's another problem of the movies that like around them.

There's like non jokes happening and just like well this is amazing. Yeah, I think so like I thought I had another train about that. I could jump up. I think that this movie reminded me a lot Or this movie made me wish I could watch again was Invisible man well that's my issue because I appreciate so much the stuff that was happening in I mean this thing I lean into is I think this movie Not only this movie but upgrade and comparing with like this and then says not and like various seven has proved to me Lee Wannell was like the guy who has the talent it's possible.

Yeah, cuz like we know knows how to lean into just like the goofiness of it like upgrade Invisible man, they're just they're goofy horror movies They but they know what they are and they're but their tone is right also So this one is goofy, but it never feels goofy like it's goofy and it's it's goofy and it's it's Existence, you know, I mean like it's I'm making visible suit and I'm gonna abuse my I'm gonna use my invisible suit to it like Elizabeth Moss finds out why the suit is invisible or every every Instance where was with was interacting with the non like presence of the suit like I kept thinking about the restaurant scene for some reason I'm not the best scenes in or recently and this movie her sister It's kind of looks over at the knife and then gets her through it's a horrific and awesome scene And it's ridiculous because it's a guy in an invisible suit like slipping a throat in public and Elizabeth Moss is Elizabeth Mossing all over the place But because because everything is very consistent and it's not Like talking down to the audience or not trying to like be kitchy or reference something. It's its own thing it works and is It's interesting. It's aesthetically pleasing and it's it's Not I use titillating before filling fulfilling is a good one. Yeah Yeah, especially because in the end like when he gets his come up and see it makes you kind of like come on Right to pay off.

Yeah, and in this movie I mean the Stephen King ending of this movie is just a fucking travesty like I'm gonna lock you in this cell in my mind No, it feels it feels like how about that buddy? Oh I like it. I'm gonna get out. I'll be back and I'll be right It's like what are you gonna do stab yourself in the head like well?

How are you gonna be ready and if it gets out like You know, why don't you just make a chamber that like they can't get out of or something? I don't know like who cares fucking gives a shit the thing that also bummed me out Is what you create a prison for him? I was gonna hope he's gonna like fun like a fun prison like a unicorn prison I create a prison for you and just like a unicorn and Ray Bozys like oh I hate all this I also think it's really lazy the idea of that they just decided that gave how Gabriel looks is like how Gabriel looks like I think a better horror movie they try to like Symbolically like we kind of interpret Gabriel's like inner presence based on like something else besides like he is literally just Half a face and backwards lips just like a lengelier sort of something just just do something else But it doesn't it just like isn't it scary isn't it so creepy and dumb? It's like no It's not anything boring the second they showed me that monster like on the side of it I was like come on guys like come why is you taking this so seriously if it's a monster growing out?

I'm gonna see you at standpoint it sucks and how does this get how do they get psychic powers because he's a monster growing out of her head who cares To bother by the guy that's like didn't bother me like contextually only bothered me because like all the rest of the filmmaking is so stupid That they're just like oh and this right? It felt like if it like James one like like knocking into you like I did it You know it looks okay, I guess like it's very slick looking and commercial like good for you, but it also stinks But it's also kind of like a bummer like I've seen dead silence and it's a better movie. Yeah Yeah, I think that's the problem Yeah, and like you said about the Lee Wannell stuff is that like the other people associated with these movies are doing better work No, and I think it I'm always concerned when an artist leans into Like the out where he can say like it's not a serious movie or it's a joke or you know whatever Instead of just kind of owning what it like making a better movie and owning what it is Yeah, which is I think what this is I'm gonna make an Aquaman movies like hey guess what those movies aren't cool like you are not a cool guy because you make Aquaman movies Well, it's like he thought this was cool. That's like it's not it's just boring and Pasei I love like and we can move on I love the idea we move on to a movie where like they don't care about this stuff because the director has control over their film and It makes aesthetic and emotional sense the the acquisition of the signature killing tool is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in my whole life and I was the one I was so proud about that though What you know like when he like figured out that killing tool with like the oh James one Sorry James one like when he figured out he's like I'm so proud of that It's like why I'm used to sword trophy and I'm gonna cut it down and make it sharp and then I'm only gonna kill Don't worry about it then and then we like cuts it down.

I'm gonna use You know I'm gonna use it one more time. Yeah, and but they're gonna know that there goes my mind is gonna play Yeah Oh my god, that was so bad and I actually actually kind of appreciate that I prefer as like a joke. Yeah. Yeah, I hope I mean But again for joke it's played for seriousness and then when you're like watching you're like this isn't serious Like why are you doing this and what house has an exhaust like a huge human size exhaust man in the house that That's the one kind of funny that which kind of just falls to stories But but that's the thing but it's not it's I can't tell and this is not a comment on you I can't tell if you're laughing because it's legitimately funny or if you're laughing because it's so fucking stupid It's a fucking stupid, but like so that's the thing.

Why would he spend so much time doing something that's so dumb Why not just make a good movie a good scary movie? Oh, I use this like fucking Shilaki shit as a crutch. Well, that's the thing I said like and leaning into our last review is like the fact that like when you ask me is this deliberately bad? I said no, it's deliberately shocky.

Yeah. Yes, that's right And because our last movie we're gonna talk about is deliberately schlock but really good and it's done for the schlock is amazing It's amazing for a different effect. Yeah, and it acknowledges it schlock while blowing your mind the entire guy because it's it's it's schlock is earned and is purposeful and has a and has a Place comfortable. Yeah, and has a place in the universe that it's building this movie is building for itself And that movie I guess this is this year movie, right?

This is a point of one. Yeah, so which is awesome is who directed this? No, this is a pronto Bailey bonds sensor This depiction is dangerous. I'm only need I'm cutting it Look smart producer I'd end investment phones Maybe you know could watch my latest Frederick North submission wonder what the science film does this actress?

Did take it and the stuff you've never been clear on exactly what you remember You this prize what the human brain can edit out when it can't handle truth Someone's losing the plot People think that I create So Inid plays a worker for the British a board of film classifications during the early 1980s This is during the video nasty era Mm-hmm, so the era which I believe it was 70 or 80 some films in which films were denied classification in Britain Including Drillick alert which is shown in the film the evil dead other films by definition Carnage movie that they reference a real movie or cannibal Hollikos, right is I don't think they said Holocaust is a kind of no I thought it was like a little reason, but I'm sure it was probably rough probably can't work for a work animal Maybe yeah, or if it's not they didn't say that because I don't think they did it's probably the movie that they're mentioning But she plays a sensor in these errors But she is also the sister of somebody who disappeared when she was seven years old her parents have basically finally given up on Finding the sister and are trying to get Inid on board with her child like running off Inid however watches a movie directed by Frederick North who she feels as though the main actress is her sister And so she dives deep into that film She thinks as though that Frederick North has had kidnapped her daughter Connect her sister sorry and has made a movie about it. So she gets really deep into it a little too deep into it Eventually finds that That sister Alice Lee and brings her back to her parents and her parents are really appreciative for bringing her back It depends on what editing scene you see Yeah, that is the extent of it. This movie is It's phenomenal. It's just just an absolute It has it has the wherewithal of horror films as the wherewithal of production editing I can't I can't mention the name Algar I believe in her name Irish so that name could be pronounced she is a number of five nominal script in that she plays two different characters basically she plays the character of the very controlled Enid who's you know editing movies and Enid who is You know Yeah, it's like obsessed by movies This this film controls itself until it's third act and its third act goes fucking balls the walls in all the right ways Perfectly perfect absolutely.

I was watching this movie going like this is fine I was a big red litter media fan. We talked about that. I talked about this before it's just a It's guys that review movies, but they're more comedians than movies and When they reviewed this movie, they were like oh, this was fun. I got like oh, this was fun And then like when it goes to live and I'm like it goes to it.

Yeah, it doesn't and it commits to it I'll go full on she's one of the best performances of the year for me as a hard She's good. Yeah, it's it's rough. It's hard to watch Well, but it's hard to watch sometimes when it's not even stuff that's happening in the movie Like them showing clips of movies in the very beginning was worse than anything that fucking happens Yeah, just watching like video like nasty stuff and you're like, it's fine Like it's not a real thing. I mean I watch this movie right after watching the Linden and I was I could like two reason the reason we talk about this is like this movie blows I don't know what's right.

I couldn't give two fucking shit about the horror aspects of my link They are non-effective non-interesting non-scary non, you know Squirm inducing they're not gross. They're not gross. Yeah, even just the beginning of this movie watching like Or even not even being a movie watching some of the scenes that she is forced to watch in like even some of the made-up movies that they did for this That one rape scene, which you know they talk about it's which is supposed to be kind of like a church No, no, this is that one scene where there's like the guy and she recognizes like the office from that guy's house It's it's effective because it's referencing other movies that did that exact same thing So if you are a person who watches a lot of movies, you know that that stuff is real not that it's real like It's like there are movies that have that stuff Okay, but some bars run truer like that like bars aren't sure sort of E-thos to it and I like Got feeling to it. I'm like, I don't necessarily know what that well.

Yeah, I don't have it like a Nordic whatever Well the dog 95. Yeah, I'm not going to find a movie that this so I kept thinking did you end up watching a violation on? It's not sure. Um, it also came out this year in features like an interesting lead performance I don't know how much like able for air stuff.

It's like reminding me of that sure and that's a I'm only thinking of I was just thought it's like fairly new, but it's a rape revenge movie that is not Super effective because it is Too close It's too close. That's not the way that I want to describe it. It's because it doesn't have a metaphor attached to it So it's which I guess one would argue that it doesn't it doesn't need to but it's ultimately in service of it's ultimately in service of just establishing the plot of a rape revenge movie which I've got a Problem is when like the rape is kind of unearned which is like a horrible thing to say But if you're because it almost like you're making a movie about or was it making a movie about a rape and then everything else That happens after it is still just kind of doubling down on the way I think this movie almost skirts that line it does because and but it does it well and is more effective and affecting Because it's attached to it's attached to another metaphor like we also works because directed and produced by a woman Wait, I think I think I'm like that entire like ending scene of this movie is so fucking good But I think it's like it's just like the girl screaming and it cuts right back and forth and what I love I love the idea that like this I don't know if you picked up on this and I have nothing to do with each other because they like Want me to reference to each other both this and malignant open the same exact way it opens with like shitty TV footage I did like that was just like could I could you not remember me saying like hey, I want a human look then watch Sensor Because they're purposely trying to make an old style looking movie but that old style is committed or themed movie to or just like a very specific horror genre But this movie commits to the period, you know, I mean that's it's a video nasty that is referencing video nasties You know, I mean which is really a rare moment in it. It's an absolutely it mixes politics with emotion You know, I mean like the kidnapping of or like the disappearance of the the daughter doesn't seem exploitative In service of like establishing horror it seems it's in service of establishing a character well, you know a background I watch their job.

I watch this movie. I was like the movie I could hurt it too like This is kind of humorous because of the fact that like this movie's gonna be showing in Jacob Burns Is I compared this to like Super near part one? Mm-hmm like it had the same kind of general feel of souvenir like in terms of it's lead character of being kind of like in the Smiths of a world. I mean obviously Obviously the end scenario is way different than what would happen with Joanna Hogg in you know, souvenir But like it felt it felt as though it's like the same kicking off point Yeah, it's interesting that's interesting because it's it is a consideration more so than it's like an active like horror movie You know, you're really considering an era and a person living in that era confronting the nature of that specific cultural era like head-on And I think a souvenir is someone doing that less broadly more acutely with like their own their own personal narrative I mean, I like this movie way more than I like a souvenir Only because just punch yourself I think I think I think one of those things where like the souvenir is in the moment is Satisfying independent the mindage film.

This is more real and true and this this Hits harder and almost seems to have like it has much less of a narcissistic value and which is not to say that like the souvenir has no value I'm like I'm just saying from like a from an Experiential level a sensual level I this is was drawn from experience a way that I was never drawn it hard It's like when he when he says like what are you doing when she stabs in the chest? Yeah Well, the whole fucking hits the whole the whole director scene when he's like like screen testing her in the woods And like she just doesn't get it the the dread just builds and builds and builds because as if you are you find this director guy totally pretentious But you also there's a moment rose anyway, but you also there's a moment we become aware not the guy that she kills But like the guy in the woods. Yeah, um, there's a moment that she decapitates with the guy like the Frederick North kind of like stand right? you Like I got it like I was actually great because the guy like sits there for a second Before she decapitates right north and goes like what are you doing?

Yeah, and it's great. We're just like super great Like what are you doing because we understand as the viewer we've understood it since you got to the trailer that oh They're just making a movie. Yeah, and this guy sucks and he's but he sees a step removed He's not only just sucks like he sucks, but he's like a step removed from it He's just like it's like it's a movie and it's part of it It's part of like the shitty game that he's playing you know I mean and we get it and it's unfortunate But she's because she's so in that's why I love this movie because this movie has subtext where my lignant has none She's so deep. I'm so excited She's like when you when you should watch this movie is like he's gonna hate this movie No, I really liked it She's so deep into those movies that she can't let go of it She's so deep into the narrative of her sisters by being found that she can't let go of that either and those two things are working simultaneously Dead to right and the beauty I think of this movie is expressed I think in Comparing it to something like Candyman these movies are both about the same length if you take out the Candyman's extensive Credits there.

It's about the same amount of content But the economy on display in Sensor is made to us use to a much greater effect than the economy probably bond trusts herself and need to cost a dozen I think they're both equally really good filmmakers, but like Baby bond trusts herself or she's doesn't or we can like I mean because I think I never book better filmmakers than fucking James One right one's a fine filmmaker, but he's not like a good filmmaker. He's like one step above like that. He's a shank guy He's a fun filmmaker sure him and Josh I would say I would say I would say no it could have been fun could have been except if you didn't know how to make a fun movie Yeah, he done but like these two directors like neither cost a product really bond do have a movie But they're new So we are to do let's just look at Aquaman the scene in the Nick Cave scene. There is a kingdom I don't see no Oh, really?

So there is a kingdom scene when Aquaman comes out of the water goes into the bar in the sniper cut is More fun than just that one scene a hundred times more fun than anything that happens in Aquaman 100 times Aquaman fucking sticks everything about stinks DC movies stink. He isn't he doesn't trust himself enough Well, it's just because the character because I think James one is a good director I think he trusts himself James one is a good director when he's not trying to be so like so like So sounds like a good movie. That's look at even something like what's the tie west movie the Jones? No, no one one fuck what's the name of that movie?

I put my phone open I should just look at Okay for you. It's that movie is commenting on The sacrament It's so fucking good so good. It's so small. It's so simple It feels very independent a little unfinished like everything's a set You know I mean like it's very obvious that but he's able to achieve a mood while still caught and an appropriate tone and one that is effective Every time we talk about the spot I think about 2013 but we can talk about it I think I referenced other stuff.

I've never talked about in reference to on your next because I like love that movie maybe Um, it's not like AJ boat a bone. Yeah, maybe I don't remember why we talk We be it's a J bone with your next I think it's possible that we talked about it in regards to or not in on the podcast We just talked about it. Um Willingly talk about that I'm able to comment on horror movies like that while making it's having its own original thoughts and making its own original thing You can point to the I mean to point to something as well in flame whose reputation is so inflamed doesn't matter anymore Like the green inferno as commenting on all those you know Cannibal Holocaust all that other shit is in the podcast we talk about the guest. Yeah, yeah The guest was on my head and we talked about that as a horror movie where it's bad It's like no, but like it's it's it's not trying to be a yeah It's not trying to be like the citizen Kane of this movie But diving into the things that make that kind of movie what it is but it's doing them authentically So when Dan Stevens kicks a shit out of a bunch of guys at a bar you're like that's cool when he kills back when he kills um What's the base of the guy from that's ready not less break when he kills um The guy from Avatar, you know, don't know David Joe David more when he was Joe David more like it feels authentic Um, yeah And even when like he does the classic like the best scene that ever happened in people of them history with the grenades like it's a joke You know I mean, but it's it's the because the tone is consistent and authentic It is earned feels real and is legitimately both funny and cool and There's nothing that's happening in sensor That's as cool as what's happening in the guest, but it feels but it feels really earned and it's of a whole exactly It's so authentic and so real That you can just slip into it.

I mean sensors isn't cool. Nothing about sensors cool. No, it's uncomfortable It's perfectly not cool. I hate watching I hated watching it to be honest I hate watching some scenes the scene when she goes to that guy's house was really uncomfortable.

Yeah, like even the finish of it like when I didn't just like with her parents and like her parents just kind of said in there and she's like, yeah I hated all of that, but it's so fucking good. I could have done with like another minute of Please be her, but I'm happy. I'm happy it did and did not do it I just wanted I wanted to feel very uncomfortable at the end like and if I had if it had the movie had kind of committed itself to Which is not said there's anything wrong with it. It's probably gonna be my top 10 for the year If it committed itself to kind of doing like almost like a stand-up comedy thing where it commits to a bit That's not working so hard that it eventually becomes kind of funny If it committed to like please be her please be like, you know You know it has to be you or whatever she says for like a lot longer before it transitioned out of that into like the kind of surrealist ending That it did it would have both it would have pushed me out and then drawn me back in with its commitment to like this just arrangement But even as it is it's it's a thing We don't know how to talk about movies anymore.

Malignant is not deranged. Malignant is not like whatever this movie is deranged But it doesn't like if you were just to describe it to somebody it wouldn't sound fucked up There's no babies growing out of anybody's heads in this movie You know I mean no one plunges like a hand a backwards bent like hand through like We've been popping up in the third act of this movie. Yeah, it's that doesn't happen here But like when she sits down to watch What is that movie that she gets from the video store like the paper bag when she's not to watch the movie and nothing Even really happens like that we see but You know something terrible is everyone she shows the video case of her dad. You're just like don't like just don't know The most fucked up movie since nine nine days nine days is a stringly fuck that movie.

I think about it interesting right 90s makes me so happy that I are targeted Up nine days is like nine days is the unfortunate movie where we just keep talking about it We're like oh, yeah, it's the movie that's our best Yeah, it is fucked up But that's why I'm happy to have encountered something like sensor and something like the card counter Because they are not the movies that everyone's telling us are gonna be the good movies of the year or like the movies Oh, this is gonna be like if the card counter gets nominated for the card counter manages to snag a best actor like nomination Or even a best supporting actress for Tiffany Haddish Which is like probably on the table because she's maybe a little do and I think the supporting actress I think actress this year in this shit fuck years this year I'm sucker right like I think she's might be able to score an Oscar no But like that would be a gift you know I mean and we're talking about us We never want to talk about us But like I'm happy to have really three really interesting movies that are kind of kicking my ass this year And then some of the stuff that we saw earlier in the year is still very effective Although when you see some of these movies that are functioning like this You're just in the black Messiah you almost wish like pushed a little harder to be like a harder movie Well, just black must say it it's actually for us. It's 2021. Yeah, okay Um the father I think is a pretty good example of a movie that's pushing pretty hard feels pretty good It's funny. Yeah, still 2021 for us But it's also not just have the magic weight that I think some of these like the card counter and sensor does it's very specific to its Plate which is hard and terrible to watch it unfortunate and like it's an acting like it's So excited that horror movie is making you think but I mean I think we talked about this a little bit when you ended the podcast proper like I Was able to encounter some horror movies on a different level than I was like previously went to believe that I was able to Encounter them on so like and I've talked about it before and I've talked about it So like a bunch of other people that aren't on this podcast that have definitely not wanted to hear about this movie I saw the devil like is a fantastic film if we're different between films and movies I saw the devil is a film a guy eats human flesh a guy almost kills another guy like 50 times and then ultimately kills him It is kind of sad about the way he killed him to the point where I'm kind of sad about the way he killed him It functions on the level of like a standard issue action slash horror movie But because of the quality of the filmmaking and the subtext of it is so much more and sensor in a lot of ways I feel like is that exact same way and I think it's just fun.

It does not hit the level of that No, it's because it's not fun in that exact same way, but it's fun It's also not fun in the sense of like it's not as good of a movie as all that No, I suppose not but I think it's one of those things that works It's one of those beautiful movies that works in comparison to like the world around it Well, and I think that's really interesting way to put it because it's shot like a videonasty. It's about videonasty I encountered it kind of you just kind of being like this is a good movie. Yeah, I just texted like No, so like didn't happen watch this movie instead and it really does everything better Right, and I was never gonna see that we were never gonna see that movie in theaters that movie was only ever gonna be available to you or me on A VHS tape that movie if not for me sure that's how that's how those movies function in real life You know I mean like the TV screen is the perfect place to watch that movie because that's the only place You were ever gonna watch it and the only unfortunate thing is that my TV is wide instead of square where and like the perfect version is that like You buy a video from Blockbuster and take it home to your square TV and like pop it into your noisy VCR And it runs and you feel like something terrible is like you feel like you've done something really wrong Yeah, but you can't bring yourself to pop the movie out of the thing Which is exactly what happens in this movie? It's a perfect marriage of medium and theme and aesthetics that you know is is just a Pretty it's special enough to be special Yeah, and especially in a year or in a movie climate that seems as barren of specialness As this one is proving to be bad This year, but I think our top tens will be interesting I mean, but they'll be also like how interesting is the green knight anymore upon reflection?

I think it's really solid and very Good, I think it's one of the best but is it like no I honestly think it's one of the best right? And I think it's one of the best too, but it's also the more that I think the more I think about it That's interesting it becomes really the more I think about the more interesting it does I was like I want I need to be watching it more to like renew its interestingness I've watched it like three times such for you to so right because it's on demand now so you can just kind of get it It has that a it has that um The come to leave on fire what element to it is a portroly on fire element right like watch it I'm not integrating as a movie. No saying all I'm saying is that it's like as I've encountered other movies Oh, and then just got the opportunity to see nine days again It's become very competent Excellently made Symmetographies beautiful all the choices are right the castings correct as a whole though It makes more sense to me why it's good than something like sensor Which see or the card counter or nine days which seem to be operating on their own levels of cinema almost Which is a stupid thing to say but green knight I get I don't necessarily get the card counter I don't necessarily get sensor But the more I think about them the better they work for me, you know Which is I think is just like proof of like a certain depth and I think they've allowed his capable of those depths I just don't think he's like you're looking for them. He's not trying to go get them He's still trying to be the green knight is a weird movie, but it's definitely a crowd pleaser You know, I mean the right crowd like that Patel is very heroic.

It looks beautiful. It sounds beautiful It's an interesting flick. Yeah, but is it I mean it doesn't like for me. It doesn't punch like sensor punches like sensor Really?

Yeah. Oh, yeah interesting I wanted to like uber defend my I would say they're both like very equal with like what they're trying to do for me. Yeah, yeah Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree with that I just want to those two absolutely kind of kick me in the balls and I was just kind of left I'm actually really happy that you like presenting a sensor and you're like those movie like kill me Oh, yeah, it was it was it was an experience I mean I present you sensors to be like hey, here's a movie to like talk about People do horror movies wrong and so many people focus on the wrong things when they're making horror movies And they'll feel this on the right things though. We do horror movies, right?

Yeah, we do that's to be our new slogan I mean I can I can't fucking do or movies we do horror movies right I can do horror movies men We do them good if you want to talk about our movies you can tweet us at film pivotal. I hope this is sacrament Ty West AJ Bowen Joe Swanberg But if you want to talk to Joe Swanberg a little bit more you can talk to Joe Swanberg watching your next directed by Adam Windard and Also, someone who's better at this than Adam Windard the director of your neck of your neck of not your next the director of the guest And also a gods and living Joe Swanberg did not do I mean I just want work on it guys? Oh my god. I just want to get the movie Imagine if the Swanbergs is there two swanbergs?

It's just Joe. Imagine if Joe Swanberg and the do-plus brothers collaborated Oh, you're pulling brother style on a Godzilla movie. Oh my god. That'd be good.

Well, we got some big movies coming out That are mostly I think coming out on streaming I believe I'm gonna be honest. I feel so Clint's what's coming out the new movie right another one. It's like The 1618 to Paris Just him sitting This restaurant which is never How do we talk about the restaurant that was never open? Why is that restaurant ever open?

There's never anybody in there and you can't say that it was a covid thing because there's lots of parts of this movie where there's people In them because he was an old man just a couple of people in the restaurant. He's an old man The second he was an old man. I was like why does he have a restaurant? Why doesn't you just have a house and be like oh excuse me?

Is that your is that your You want to be cock-macho You Just wearing so much You know what made crime actually better if he left a cut in or there was a boom like In the middle of crime I'm like oh god this guy's a cuck and it's like oh boy that guy is definitely a cuck No, imagine James wanted claims were essentially making the same movie because they're both making like parodies of a style of movie They're gonna never happen though Attractive woman knew like as an age to earn Please would would have assumed you could have had sex with her and say no Like I am like 40 this is not gonna happen. She's like yeah, yeah, I know what happened Like no I am an adult person definitely don't want to happen I'm gonna do everything in my power to ensure that this doesn't happen Which means I'm just going to blow really hard in your general area in your whole half your body's gonna fall off I'm literally gonna blow my own brains out to just make this James wanted to just like I think I think we have to have a scene where like you like present yourself to him And she's like I'm gonna kill myself. Could you build my brains out? I've been loading I've been learning all the guns my movies with non blanks for years I took me five years to find salmon I just know Watch don't watch crime watch but do watch you watch you watch sensor you have to watch crime on Joe You're gonna want your beers and don't watch our or reveal it.
