Cape May County fire officials warn residents not to use batteries that were in flood water

from KYW Newsradio Audio On-Demand

Fire officials in Cape May County are warning residents not to plug in, charge or try to test any batteries or battery-powered devices that have been in flood water after the nor'easter. That includes batteries used in power tools, e-bikes or scooters, cell phones, laptops, tablets and other rechargeable devices. Batteries exposed to water can overheat, catch fire or even explode. The Fire Marshal's Office also warns people not to throw those batteries in household trash or recycling, as damaged batteries can lead to fire hazards when collected, transported or processed. They say the safest thing to do with any flood-damaged batteries is to leave them unplugged and seek guidance before using or throwing them away. (Photo: Getty Images)
