Cardiac Power Output (CPO) in Cardiogenic Shock

from Saving Lives Podcast: Critical Care w/eddyjoemd · host Eddy Joe Gutierrez, MD

Cardiac power output is a calculation one should do when caring for patients with cardiogenic shock. Data has shown it to be the strongest hemodynamic correlate of mortality in cardiogenic shock. We should be using it in our practice to determine whether a patient will benefit from mechanical circulatory support (MCS). In this episode, we explore the concept of cardiac power output (CPO) as a potential tool to help guide management in patients with cardiogenic shock. We review the underlying physiology of CPO and its potential advantages over more traditional hemodynamic parameters, such as cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. We also discuss the practical aspects of measuring CPO and the potential limitations and challenges of its use in the clinical setting. Tune in to learn more about this promising new approach to managing patients in cardiogenic shock.
