Hello and welcome to the Center for Success Career Talk Podcast, a series that provides tips and advice for fine-tuning your resume, networking and getting that first job. The hosts for the series are members of the Center for Success at St. Xavier University in Chicago. Hello and welcome to the Center for Success Podcast.

This is Gloria Obelow's Academic and Career Resource Advisor in the Center for Success. I would like to welcome you to our Career Talk series. In this episode of the Navigating the Job Search Sub-Series, I will be discussing another tip to make you stand out, which would be career conversations. You're probably wondering what is a career conversation.

Well, you may have already heard of an informational interview, so that is just another way to call it. An advantage that you all can utilize to your advantage is a student card. What do I mean by that? You can use this as an opportunity to learn more about a career of potential interests.

How do you find potential people to conduct career conversations with? You can find them through your peers, friends, coworkers and the like as a first-point to contact, but you can also consider people that you have met through networking events as well. Once you have found a person that you are interested in having a career conversation with, you should develop focus questions that are directed towards the individual's industry, as well as their current role in company, to obtain more information to envision yourself in that role. Don't feel that you have to limit yourself to these topics, as these are merely springboards to kick off the conversation.

You also need to do some research about the individuals you plan on meeting with. Take some time to look at their professional websites and profiles, as well as looking into the company they currently work at to brainstorm potential talking points. These can also be foundations for questions that you can ask during your career conversation. While in this space of preparation for career conversation, you will also need to find their contact information.

Sometimes you can find this information on their LinkedIn profile, but for others it may be harder to find, so you can try the company's online directory as a secondary route. Some examples of possible questions that you can ask during a career conversation are as follows. What skills are most important for the job? What does the day-to-day look like?

What do you like most about your role? What would you recommend to someone breaking into this industry? What led you to your current position? Don't feel like you have to use these questions as you can modify them or develop your own.

Through career conversations, you will not only learn about a particular position or industry, but you will also indirectly learn about how careers do not necessarily follow a linear path as people have likely switched over to a different industry or type of company.
