The island has a lot of maritime history starting with the natives that lived here before the European travellers came to conquer this beautiful island north of Venezuela. The capital city of Willemstad was once a city surrounded by a fortress which has probably kept it alive in it's beauty we still see today.  The main street is famous for it's colorful buildings and Queen Emma pedestrian pontoon bridge.  The streets are still beautiful and have the old world European feeling as you walk through the street and alleys.
