Carla Swensen-Haslam: Law graduate advocates for asylum seekers at the US/Mexican border, and simple ways we can help the vulnerable in our communities

from Beautiful Shifts · host Lindsay & Shantil

Carla, a dual citizen of Columbia and the U.S., shares how after playing college soccer at BYU and for the U20 Columbian National team, she had to discover her identity beyond soccer. She shares about being a professional soccer announcer for REAL Salt Lake and deciding to go to Law School to further her passion of learning about public policy and immigration law. As a practicing lawyer she recently had her first child and talks about the transition to motherhood.      Carla shares about her experience advocating for asylum seekers at the US/Mexican border. We discuss the TEDx talk she gave earlier this year - Credible Fear: Stories of asylum seekers coming to the US (link below). Carla went from wanting to advocate for the vulnerable but not knowing how, to learning how to implement advocacy and sharing with others how to do the same. She shares simple and actionable ways we can get involved in helping the underprivileged in our communities.    Watch Carla's TEDx talk here   Find Carla on Instagram @haslam.house    Thanks so much to Carla for taking the time to talk with us! Wherever Life Takes Us whereverlifetakesuss Join three best friend as they explore this beautiful world! Half Ties kwamenabrace Half-ties is a conversation series on the funny, beautiful and sometimes challenging moments that interracial couples experience being with somebody who’s culturally different from them.Hosted by creative couple Olivia & Kwamena, we listen to stories about growing up with racism and prejudice; falling in love and meeting the in-laws; navigating difficult conversations within the family and in society, and how these couples make their relationship work and what they actively choose to pass down to the next generation. C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle St. Philip's Church: Charleston, SC Come join us on Wednesday nights as we explore the riches of C.S. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
