Carmen is 29 and lives in Croydon West, one of London's most deprived constituencies. She wanted to train as a nurse and help her community access healthcare, but found herself blocked by central government choices about NHS workforce planning. Health Education England's budget constraints, imposed by HM Treasury, meant that training places couldn't match the obvious need for healthcare workers in areas like Croydon West. The trainers existed, Carmen was ready to learn, and the wards desperately needed staff. What was missing was a Westminster government willing to fund the training posts that would connect willing people to essential work. This is Carmen's story of how Treasury spending limits turned healthcare workforce planning into a barrier rather than a pathway. Blocked Britain investigates when political choices prevent people from contributing to their communities.
