Carolyn Young: Retail NZ CEO on the current move-on orders proposal and their opposition to it

Retailers are staying opposed to move-on orders as they stand, saying they should target behaviour, not vulnerable people.  The proposed Bill would let Police direct people out of a public space for rough sleeping, begging, or behaving disorderly.  The Justice Committee's recommended changes, including lifting the age orders could apply to from 14 to 18.  Retail NZ CEO Carolyn Young told Kerre Woodham disruptive behaviour is the main issue for retailers, not homelessness.  She says it doesn't matter if the person's in a suit or what time it is, it should be down to behaviour, not whether someone has a home or not.  They're also seeing less and less rough sleepers blocking doorways, Young says, as compliance officers now usher people away each morning.  She says they're generally out of doorways by around 7 or 8am.  LISTEN ABOVE   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
