America’s Cold War with Russia drove human innovation forward for almost half a century. From the rocket technology that sent men to the moon to unlocking the secrets of the atom that promised untold destruction as well as unlimited power. If you were a scientist at the time including “application for military use” on your research grant proposal was almost a guaranteed carte blanche from the U.S. Government. With so many projects in development at once, it was inevitable that there was a lack of oversight on some of the less than ethical experiments. Specifically one that was approved in 1953 to explore the effect of various mind altering substances and techniques on living human subjects with aims of psychological manipulation and behavior modification. The experiments were carried out not just on military black sites but also with the help of numerous top tier US universities.
