Case File 99-Port Arthur

from ALIEN THEORISTS THEORIZING · host Big Theory Podcasts

When England decided to begin the colonization of Australia, then known as New South Wales, it was deemed necessary to help bolster the number of voluntary colonists with prisoners and undesirables. But when you send all your prisoners to be colonists where do you send the prisoners who can’t function as colonists? Answer: Tasmania. One notable location was timber station/turned prison that had begun its service in 1830. This prison housed the the worst of the worst from all over Australia, repeat offenders who could not serve a purpose even in a penal colony full of convicts. Guests of the prison were subjected to draconian isolation treatments and back-breaking hard labor. It’s no mystery why a number of prisoners decided to resort to suicide as a means of escape. With this much torture and pain all concentrated into one area it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that this area is now known as one of Australia’s top most Haunted locations.
