Podcast 018. This is MetroTower. You are cleared for takeoff. Roger MetroTower.
Podcast 018 is rolling. Welcome to Females in Aviation, Episode 18. We are here today with Casey Grant, who is among the first of the African-American flight attendants. Welcome, Casey.
Good morning. How are you today? I'm great. I'm great.
Happy to be talking to you. Oh, I'm so pleased and thank you so much for having me on your show. I really appreciate it. So let's start out by you giving a little bit of a background on how and when you got started as a flight attendant.
What led you to it? Okay. Here's the history of... Now Delta at the time was still just a regional, is it not?
Absolutely, it was a sub-neer. Oh, that's great. So you mentioned that you were among the first of the African-American flight attendants. Was Delta one of the first to take that path?
Oh, no. Delta way down. Okay. So when do you think the first African-American flight attendant was with any airline in the U.S.?
Thank you, Amanda. Oh, good. Actually, you heard me interrupt your story with a gas. I couldn't help but those things just still get me to the core when I hear those stories.
Oh my gosh. It's a link. Right. You definitely paved the path.
I did. I did. I did. Sure, they're very grateful to you for that.
Now you mentioned trials and tribulations and beyond the hotel room example. What are some others? Thank you for that. Oh, yeah.
So we... Oh my gosh. Yeah. Now we're talking late 60s here.
Talking 19th. See, I graduated in 1969. I mean, I remember reading the stories of racial discrimination, but I guess I was kind of sheltered from it. Absolutely.
And that is why, as I said, my book started... Right. So you couldn't point to the black three and say, okay, it'll be us three, then. Exactly.
Exactly. So there was less discrimination in the military? My father. But this was happening to you in a northern city.
We can talk about the north-south. I just haven't noticed that other things. But amongst the other flight attendants, the white flight attendants were fairly supportive of you, or were there issues there as well? Oh, they were...
Oh, I must say. I'm trying to do a job. I didn't know and excited. So they went up to the eye to find my way to...
How were those barriers broken and bridges built? Was it just a matter of you not whining and just a matter of time? It was of action. Right.
And you know, I go both ways with affirmative action because I'm not black, but I am a woman and I did benefit from it. Absolutely. And that's important to think people. And I want to say something about flight attendants in general, black or white male or female, is I don't think a lot of people realize what an important position that is and how integral it is to the safety of any flight.
That is an excellent point because the flight attendant is not there for glamour. Your flight attendant is on that plane for safety. That is the most important safety feature. The pilot, of course, is the number one.
And we are just like next to him or right under it because without that flight attendant and people don't pay attention to that demonstration, they need to pay attention to the demonstration. We are the safety feature on the aircraft. Right. And they don't pay attention.
It cracks me up every time I ride on an airline because I probably need to pay attention less than any of them with my background. And yet I do. I get that chart out and I follow along every time and look for all the exits and most people don't. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
I do. I do. I do. I do.
It goes from A to Z on different stories, but it's the black history. The hijacking is really an interesting story. It's not reading the story until you go to New Wat to know how the evacuation ended. It's really a pretty dramatic piece.
So it sounds like it would be an amazing book to read whether you're a flight attendant or not, and whether you're just somebody who's interested not only in black history, but any kind of history. It's all part of what happened back in the day. Absolutely. I found your book on Amazon.com and it could be purchased either in the paperback or the Kindle version.
Absolutely. Where else might people find it? Where I would have my next book signing for the diff- Oh yeah. Your website is theflygirl10.com.
So that's theflygirl number one zero dot com. Very good. And you also have an email with people who want to contact you. That is KCCA-C-A-S-E-Y at theflygirl10.
Yes, and we wrote one. Good audience. So yeah, one zero. And you also do a blog talk radio show.
Tell us about that. Absolutely. Thank you. Yes.
That's at blogtalkradio.com slash theflygirl10. I'm definitely wishing you well with your book. And it's on Kindle and Barnes and Noble and we're through me through my website. Oh, I hope you do too.
It certainly sounds like an awesome story and I think you'll get some response. Perfect. Yes. Thank you very much for joining us.
Oh, I'd love to thank you so much for having me on. Okay, Casey. Have a great day. SoundFX courtesy of freesound dot org number 15256789 and 262259 Shady Day.
