Casey Mulligan and Michael Strain explored this question in a recent AEI web event, which has been adapted into this extended episode of Political Economy. Casey Mulligan is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, and he served as chief economist for the Council of Economic Advisers in the Trump Administration from September 2018 to August 2019. He is also the author of the recently released book, You’re Hired! Untold Successes and Failures of a Populist President . Michael Strain is the Arthur F. Burns Scholar in Political Economy and director of economic policy studies at AEI.
