In addition to writing genre-blending novels that incorporate fairy-tale, mystery, detective, crime, and horror elements, she is the recipient of the 2021 International Latino Book Award. Heavily influenced by dark fairytales, folklore, urban legends and true crime and a master of blending gothic, horror, and suspense, Pelayo's latest is a Chicago-based dark retelling of Sleeping Beauty and explores what this classic tale reveals about death and the particular role of women in the fairytale.
