Bernabo Visconti, an Italian tyrant, forces a representative of the pope to eat the message he was sent to deliver. The Pope is torn between his loyalties to his father and his duties to the Church. Catherine experiences intense visions, often collapsing in a mystical ecstasy. It is during one of these visions that she receives the stigmata. Bernabo Visconti threatens several characters. Characters are shown drinking after a successful battle.
