Hi everyone. I’m Stephanie LI. Coming up on today’s program.重点提要 -China’s power cuts widen amid shortages and climate push, fuelling surge in power stocks;-American Chamber of Commerce’s survey shows 82% of companies projected revenue growth in 2021.Here’s what you need to know about China in the past 24 hours 中国经济要闻Power rationing and forced cuts to factory production is widening across China.More than 10 provinces have ordered power cuts in the past days, including economic powerhouses Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong, amid electricity supply issues and a push to enforce environmental regulations. The country’s top economic planner last month flagged nine provinces for increasing intensity over the first half of the year amid a strong economic rebound from the pandemic. That pushed local governments to order the cuts to avoid missing targets for reducing energy and emissions intensity. In Zhejiang, about 160 energy-intensive companies have been ordered to halt production to meet energy consumption targets. The power curbs in Jiangsu also forced factories in the key manufacturing hub to cut or even halt their operations until the end of the month. Yunnan province is canceling electricity price discounts for aluminum smelters that made power costs about 16-22 percent cheaper than industry average.Meanwhile, record-high coal prices are making it unprofitable for many power plants to operate, creating supply gaps in some provinces.A number of A-share listed companies have reported the impacts in filings on mainland stock exchanges. However, stocks in power suppliers went into a frenzy since the power curbs, with several surged to the daily limit of 10 percent yesterday. Also in Hong Kong, stock prices of the energy industry soared an average of 4.6 percent today, including China Resources Power, China Power Investment and Huaneng Power. The Southbound Trading under China's Bond Connect program was officially launched today.
