The herd of 14 elephants paid a fleeting visit to Kunming a few months ago before returning to their natural habitat, finishing the 18-month trip across the province.The public’s interest in these wildlife reflects rising attention on ecological civilisation. And China’s efforts to escort the elephants home show the country’s commitment to advancing global ecological progress. Kunming, again, attracts the world’s attention this week as another hefty matter looms large for the city: to host the biggest UN biodiversity summit in a decade.Today, the first part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) kicks off in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province. More than 1,800 representatives will gather online and offline to draw a blueprint for future biodiversity conservation. The second part of the meeting, which is resuming in the first half next year, will review and make a decision on the "post-2020 global biodiversity framework" that the international society pins great hopes on.Gaining international consensus on climate change and biodiversity is an extremely difficult task, as only 6 out of 20 of the Aichi Targets have been met since countries agreed on them 11 years ago. That brings country leaders to Kunming to discuss a new action plan that they could agree on. China was among the first countries to become a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity that entered into force in 1993.
