Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday sent a congratulatory letter to the Fair.The Canton Fair has long established its brand to become a significant barometer of China's foreign trade. During the coming session until October 19, around 7,800 companies will participate on-site, while 26,000 firms from home and abroad will join virtually, marking the first time in the Fair’s history to go both on and off-line at the same time. What also makes this year special is that domestic buyers are able to take part for the first time in 64 years.Chinese Premier Li Keqiang gave a speech at the opening ceremony, saying that China's development is propelled by opening-up and reform, and China will share its development opportunities with the world to achieve better development. Li also called on all parties to work together on COVID-19 response.Li described the recovery of the Chinese economy as still “unstable and unbalanced”, with increasing challenges in maintaining a smooth economic operation.He also promised to keep China’s foreign trade policies consistent and stable, and continue to import more quality products and services, adding that the country will step up international cooperation on trade digitalisation and develop a group of pace-setter zones for the digitalisation of global trade in the Greater Bay Area.Regarded as the wind vane of China’s trade, the Canton Fair started in 1957.
